TRUTH!!!!
⚾ There is a man or a woman at every ballpark you have ever been to whose entire job is to make sure you never once think about them. The infield is level and true. The grass is cut in the direction it is supposed to be cut. The mound is the right height, the clay holds a spike instead of giving way, and the lines are where the rulebook says they are.
You only ever notice any of it when it goes wrong. A bad hop that was not really the shortstop's fault. A tarp that went on about a minute too late.
It is one of the very few jobs left where doing it perfectly means being completely invisible, which is a strange kind of craft to choose. Most ballparks have one person who has been there longer than anybody on the roster and knows that field better than anyone who has ever played on it.
They will never be on the broadcast. The game does not happen without them.
