Golfology:
Golf can be life-changing for a Black kid — not just as a sport, but as a doorway.
For many of us, the game isn’t handed down through country club memberships or generational access. So when a Black child steps onto a course, they’re stepping into a space that hasn’t always felt built for them. That alone builds confidence. Golf teaches patience in a world that moves fast, integrity in moments when no one is watching, and resilience when you have to take a penalty and keep playing anyway.
It opens rooms most kids never see — business conversations, college opportunities, mentorship circles, and career paths beyond just playing professionally. It teaches you how to shake hands, manage emotions, build relationships, and bet on yourself. For a Black kid, that exposure doesn’t just change opportunities — it changes mindset.
For me, golf became more than a game. It gave me purpose when life felt unstable. It gave me something to chase when I felt like giving up. It gave me peace walking fairways alone and structure when my world felt heavy. What started as competition became calling.
It gave me the opportunity to give back. The same game that once felt out of reach has allowed me to hold the door open for kids who look like me — to mentor them, create space for them, and remind them they belong here too. Golf opened doors for me, and now it allows me to open doors for others.
In the quiet spaces of practice and reflection, it also expanded my spiritual gift. The course became my prayer closet. The range became my place of conversation with God. Every swing taught me patience. Every setback strengthened my faith. Every sunrise round reminded me that grace shows up daily.
I may not have made it “big” in the public eye, but golf made me whole. It shaped my character, sharpened my leadership, deepened my faith, and gave me a platform to serve.
Golf didn’t just change my game — it changed my life.
