9:30 p.m. tonightโฆ
Iโm sitting on the couch with my husband, very excitedly explaining some movement science ๐
Heโs kind of chucklingโ
not at the drillโฆ but at my enthusiasm.
At the fact that this is what I get excited about.
That this is what I choose to do to relax at night.
And honestlyโฆ it is.
Iโm like, โWaitโwatch this.โ
I show him my toe touch.
Then I do a quick neurological drillโliterally just moving my eyes for about 10 seconds.
Try againโฆ
โฆand I can go further.
He just looks at meโkind of shockedโlike, โWaitโฆ what?โ
And Iโm sitting there like,
โYepโฆ isnโt this so cool?โ
Because a lot of people think improving flexibility means pushing, pushing, pushing.
But there are actually very simple, gentle things you can do
that help your body allow more movement.
And itโs honestly amazing once you know how to do it.
This is something I layer into my classes in really intentional waysโ
youโve probably heard me cue things like moving your head or your eyes during a stretch.
Thatโs not random.
Itโs part of helping your body feel safeโ
and even training your visual system.
Because what your eyes are doing is constantly informing your brainโฆ
and that shapes the neurological signals that control your movement.
Change the input โ change the response.
And sometimes that means more flexibility, instantly.

This time last week, I was getting ready for the premiere of Some & Others โจ
And Iโve been thinking about it ever since.
What started in 2006โlaying on my bedroom floor, pressing play on a Gotan Project CD and letting choreography pour outโ
became a contemporary dance work I created between 2006โ2008โฆ
one thatโs been performed by ballet and modern dance companies over the past 20 years.
And now, to see it as the centerpiece of a documentaryโฆ
itโs something so much bigger than I ever imagined.
A shared experience.
A piece that continues to mean somethingโdeeply, on a heart-changing levelโto people.
Being in Wilmington with the dancers and film team was incredibly special.
Because this kind of work begins by looking inwardโ
by being honest about who you are and whatโs true for youโฆ
not being bound by needing to be loved, but knowing you are.
And thenโฆ having the courage to express that outward.
Thatโs what creates connection.
And taking our eyes off ourselvesโour insecuritiesโ
thatโs when we can truly live.
Donโt lose your own pleasure in what youโre doing.
Itโs not just about what you giveโ
itโs about what you feel, too.
Thatโs what fills you.
And thatโs what reaches people ๐
I carry this into everything I doโ
including how I teach.
Movement isnโt something to push through.
Itโs something you experience.

Annmariaโs story is one I know so many women will relate to.
After years of professional dance, chronic pain, and two hip replacementsโฆ

Not fully in our bodies.
Today I spent hours outside, moving, laughing, being presentโฆ
and I came home feeling refreshed (and, letโs be honest, a little tired) โ but still craving something.
Not more productivity.
Not more thinking.

So I gave myself 30 minutes โ
and did todayโs Cardio Barre Sculpt class.
And hereโs what Iโve been noticingโฆ

That cycle of falling behind and making it up?
It pulls us out of the experience.

with space to feel.
