Don’t miss my last free IEP parent training class of the summer on Thursday, July 23rd at 7pm EST. This is a big one. Many of you are filling out a form that simply asks what went well and glasses over the challenges your child experienced, the things that you believe were not effective, or what was simply not beneficial. Join this training and I will share my signature process with you for writing parent concerns/ parent input that can’t be ignored. # parent advocate

IDEA requires the IEP team, when developing the IEP, to consider the parents concerns for enhancing their child’s education under 34 C.F.R.300.324(a)(1).

So if, “thank you for sharing” is where it ends, you need to do know what to do. Comment ‘IEP Parent’ to register for my free training on Thursday, July 23 at 7 PM EST.

Note: Parent concerns are not about complaining. It is about coming to a solution. If you’re complaint isn’t IEP related, (for example, complaining about the teacher) the IEP meeting is not the place for it.

You don’t have to agree. Required participants are just that…required. If everyone isn’t available, you could also tell them to reschedule at a mutually convenient time that works for everyone.

You are not a guest at your child’s IEP meeting. You are an equal member of the IEP team.

If this has ever happened to you and you want to learn how you should address the IEP team when this happens, comment ‘IEP Parent’ for my virtual class on Thursday, July 23 at 7 PM EST.

As a parent, you contribute information about your child that may not be visible from school data alone, including strengths, needs, history, concerns, changes outside school, and how your child’s disability affects your child across settings. Your contribution is

Remember: you are the only consistent member of your child’s IEP team.

Comment ‘IEP Parent’ for the link to my IEP Parent Training if you’d like to learn a strategy that schools won’t ignore when you share your concerns.

Your child’s IEP is designed to guide their future. So don’t take those decisions lightly. Make sure that anything that you agree to you fully understand. Not what you were told by someone else, but by your own understanding and decision-making. Because no one else will carry the burden of a wrong decision except for you. If you struggle with any of these things during your child’s IEP meetings, you don’t have to. Go ahead and take a step towards becoming a better IEP parent advocate for your child. Join us for training tonight, July 16 at 7 PM EST. Comment me ‘IEP Parent’ and I’ll send you the link. It’s free so all it will cost you is a little time. Your child deserves it.

Pay attention to what’s in your child’s IEP.

Sometimes vague or flexible wording creates gaps that make it difficult to know whether your child is actually receiving what they need or making meaningful progress.

Take a few minutes to read through your child’s IEP today.
