Many of you are filling out a form that simply asks what went well and glasses over the challenges your child experienced, the things that you believe were not effective, or what was simply not beneficial. IDEA requires the IEP team, when developing the IEP, to consider the parents concerns for enhancing their child’s education under 34 C.F.R.300.324(a)(1).

Note: Parent concerns are not about complaining. It is about coming to a solution. If you’re complaint isn’t IEP related, (for example, complaining about the teacher) the IEP meeting is not the place for it.

You don’t have to agree. Required participants are just that…required. If everyone isn’t available, you could also tell them to reschedule at a mutually convenient time that works for everyone.

You are not a guest at your child’s IEP meeting. You are an equal member of the IEP team.
