A 10-day backpack sheep hunt takes a lot of gear—67 pounds of it for Adam Foss, to be precise.

Watch Adam break down every item on the packing list he’s refined during his 20 years getting after it in the mountains.

For Adam Foss and crew, the Mackenzie Mountains of the Northwest Territories are one of those places. And there’s no better way to experience them than an 80-mile raft float through Dall sheep country. Somewhere along the way, it became about more than sheep: wild country, good people, and every moment in a place they love.

Our new film, North of Everything is out now. Join the crew at the link in bio.

Behind the lens with   judge Bianca Germain Photography:

“What makes this image stand out is that it captures a feeling rather than just showing someone fishing. The fisherman is out in the middle of a stormy night, trying to put fish in the boat as part of a crew competition to see who could catch the most. You can feel the weather, the tension, the long night, and the determination to keep fishing.

There’s a real grit to the frame. The wetness, darkness, lens flare, and heavy contrast make you feel like the camera and photographer are getting worked over by the same conditions as the fisherman. You can almost feel the precip and salt hitting the lens. The imperfections become part of the photograph—they make it feel less polished and more honest.

The warm light coming off the boat against the deep blue of the night gives it a cinematic quality, while the fishing rod cuts through the frame and pulls your eye out into the darkness. I also love the way the light catches the orange glove. It’s such a small detail, but it becomes the visual anchor of the image. Against all that darkness and blue, the orange glove pulls your eye straight to the fisherman’s hands and the action. It gives the silhouette just enough definition and adds this unexpected hit of color and warmth to an otherwise cold, gritty scene.

For me, the image is also a good reminder to keep shooting when the conditions get hard - and to pack a lot of microfiber towels. The unpleasant elements are exactly what make the photograph work. Sometimes the conditions you’re tempted to put the camera away for are exactly what give a photograph its character.”

Behind the lens with judge Connor Gabbott:

“Anne Bradstreet wrote, ‘if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.’

I have seen many photos of rugged mountains, beautiful sunsets and hunters warmed by golden-hour light while glassing wild places. I appreciate those images, but I want to feel the struggle. I want to see the laughter and the pain the hunters experienced. I want to smell the campfire and burnt bacon through the picture.

It is rare to capture these moments in perfect composition or ideal light. In these cases, it’s the moment and the story that matter, not technical mastery.

This image was taken with a cheap, vintage film camera on the fifth day of a float moose hunt. We had gotten a moose the day before, but many miles of completely unfamiliar river still lay ahead. We crawled out of the tents that morning to find temps had plunged and the valley was covered in fresh snow. The reluctance to get back on the river hung heavy in camp. We killed time warming ourselves by the fire to avoid packing the boats.

Something about the posture of the hunters drives home the gloom. Not even the fresh trophy in the foreground carries the excitement it held the day before.

This is a lived-in moment. Authentic and relatable. Nothing staged. This is the adversity that makes prosperity so welcome on a hunt. The grain and muted colors of the film struggling in the low light add to the grittiness. The blue undertones drive home the cold.”

Rain or shine, we had a great time! This is why the Ascent GORE-TEX Shoe is the way to go. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Hive Archery & SITKA Booth last Saturday. Special thanks to Coach Jose who taught people of all ages how to shoot bows, some for the first time ever. Way to go to all who got a bullseye their first time ever handling a bow! Our goal is to get more people outdoors and have more people learn the beauty of archery.

Coach Jose with Hive Archery has custom built a trailer he can take virtually anywhere to allow those who can’t go to a brick & mortar location, there’s nothing like it! You can see him sporting the Ascent Shoe as he coaches everyone on how to shoot properly and safely. We’re excited to work with him more in the future to allow more people to experience this one-of-a-kind archery setup.
