BLOW UP US OPEN Q HOLE - many wanted to trust me I break down why a 128-yard par 3 at my US Open local qualifier played to a scoring average of 3.65—higher than any hole at last year’s US Open at Oakmont. We examine the hole’s brutal design, including the impossibly small back shelf, firm greens that cause extreme repulsion, and how the effective landing area is smaller than a Prius. I show you why attempting to reach the back pin location was essentially a losing strategy, yet two out of every three players made bogey trying.

The data supports hitting Driver on 3. The first player I saw lay up on 3 just made a double bogey. Especially with any front left pin, the green is too small and too firm even with a pro’s dispersion with a wedge to justify laying back versus getting the tee ball down there as far as possible. It’s a sneaky difficult hole when the pin isn’t back right.
