“You can worry when I’m worried.”
This is what the anesthesiology physician assistant said to my husband Tony Nelson (a board certified pediatric cardiologist) when he asked her about my falling blood pressure and oxygen saturation as I lay on the operating table after giving birth to our son via a complicated c-section.
“You’re just doing too much. Go home and rest and drink more water.”
This is what the nurse midwife said to me as I sat in the office telling her about my flank pain, high blood pressure and swelling feet, 6 days post partum.
“Well go to the hospital then since you’re soooo worried.”
This is what the on call OB/Gyn said to me when I told her about my headaches just a few hours after being treated for preeclampsia.
It’s one thing to study and work on health disparities. It’s another thing entirely to live them. And I am grateful that I lived through this.
Click the links below to listen to my latest podcast episode where I talk with Dr. Phindile Chowa, a board certified Emergency Medicine physician who is transforming healthcare and restoring dignity for patients by bringing compassionate, high quality health care to their homes. Through her concierge medicine practice, EMCare2U, she has curated a unique offering that provides on demand, comprehensive support for postpartum mothers and their babies.
