Offshore Bait and Tackle

Good morning everyone, looks like today and tomorrow are two beautiful days to fish, lots of boats heading out to fish for flounder on the reefs. And anglers heading to the rocks for some tog action.

Land based report: anglers fishing the rocks, sea walls, and pretty much any structure are reporting better fishing with tog being more active and more keepers being caught. I just spoke to one customer who called about 15 minutes after he left here and reported catching a nice trigger fish and tog around metal structure. Anglers on the rocks are also reporting steady cocktail and snapper blue action. Spoons, deadly dicks, and diamond jigs are working the best if you are chasing them. The snapper zapper float rig has been working around the inlet tipped with spearing for blues as well.

Bay report: pretty much has stayed the same. Spots and croakers have invaded the bay and they are decent sized. Flounder are still around with a high short to keeper ratio, but if you put your time in especially on the channel edges in the inlet or the dips you can still find some nice sized flounder in there.

Inshore: inshore within 20 miles has been producing steady flounder action with a very good amount of keepers being caught. A-Bomb Fishing Charters Capt Mike reported his last two trips out front good. One trip they had 10 keepers next trip 4 keepers. Quite a few other boats have seen around those numbers of keepers as well. Logos Guide Service reported that trigger fish have been steady on inshore wrecks. I spoke with a customer yesterday who did some inshore trolling and he reported that he caught some true bonito. Spanish mackerel are still hanging around along with false albacore. We are seeing false albacore fishing better around great egg reef. If you want to bend a rod and have fun, the bigger albies have been keyed in on the smaller sterling tackle crazy 8 chains and regular machine style chains(we have both styles available and I would be more than happy to set you up a small inshore trolling spread to have a good day on the water).

Past 20 miles report: a few stray bluefin right before first light and the first hour or so of light on the troll. Afterwards they are going back down deeper where you can still have a chance to jig them if you find them. Mahi fishing is a hit or miss for boats. Some boats are finding great numbers of mahi in the usual spots while others are only getting a few. It seems that 25-35 miles out is producing the best for mahi that are decent sized to keep.

Canyons: not to much intel coming in, I did hear of a few smaller class yellowfin caught south but not sure where or how many. We have a couple customers that ran to the edge today in search of tuna in the morning then tiles in the afternoon. I will report back if I hear of anything.

Good morning everyone, it's a beautiful day to be out on the water. Plenty of boats are headed out to the reefs and wrecks in search of flounder and triggerfish.

From land report: anglers this past weekend reported lots of short flounder action on minnows everywhere from the back bay to the jetties. Croakers and spot are still plentiful and can be caught on just about any crustacean bait or worms. The tog bite is getting better with a few more keepers being thrown into the mix. Anglers in the surf reported ok kingfish and croakers.

The wrecks and reefs report: Flounder fishing is pretty good. Many boats are limiting out and then playing catch and release. Fish have been caught anywhere from 40-120 feet of water. Whole squids and Mack fillets have worked really well along with jigging gulp. Finsulation had a stellar trip with limits of flounder, some trigger fish, and a couple cobia. Capt Bob from Logos Guide Service reported decent triggerfishing yesterday and also saw some cobia around.

Inshore/midshore report: boats trolling within 4 miles have been picking away at Spanish mackerel,Bonita, and falsies. Out further around 6-8 miles you can find steady action on false albacores and some smaller mahi. I only heard of one boat hooking into a wahoo this past weekend around 20 miles out but unfortunately it was lost at the side of the boat. Some boats are doing well on the pots midshore for mahi while other boats are striking out. Squid on smaller hooks and lighter leader has been the ticket to get the lock jawed fish to bite around the pots.

Canyons: not to much intel or reports has come in other than fantastic tile fishing and decent mahi fishing. The majority of the yellowfin and big eye reports are coming from the Hudson and further north. Hopefully we will see some of those yellowfins that were being caught in 40fathoms off New York's coast slide down closer to us.

Plenty of minnows are available and live green crab. All the frozen baits are in stock. If you are heading out trolling we have plenty of ballyhoo available as well.

Good morning everyone, will have some rain showers throughout the morning but nothing to crazy. We are open and the tanks are topped off with minnows and green crabs. The new favorite bait live lug worms that anglers are using for spot, croakers and kingfish are available as well along with frozen baits.

From land report: snapper and cocktail bluefish have invaded the inlet and bay feeding on minnows, spearing and any smaller profile diamond jigs or spoons. The tog bite is starting to get better along the rocks. Don't forget we have our land based tog contest going on until November 15th. Single heaviest tog wins the grand prize of a jigging world rod and a tsunami reel. Prizes for 2nd and 3rd are gift certificates for the shop. The nighttime flounder bite has gotten a lot better with fish being caught on gulp and live baits. Spots and croakers are plentiful pretty much everywhere, live lug worms have been working excellent along with fish bites.

From the boats: The bay is still producing some keeper flounder and plenty of shorts. Minnows have been working great and keeping rods bent. Boaters are reporting steady spot and croaker action as-well. Out on the wrecks and reefs there are a lot of keeper flounder being caught. Boats that are trolling have been producing false albacore, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and mahi. A couple of bluefin have been reported as well.

Good morning everyone, it's a beautiful morning to make a run to the wrecks and reefs the flounder bite has been pretty decent out there. In the bay we are still seeing plenty of short action with some nice keepers mixed in. The triggerfish have been moving in and out in flurries any sort if crustacean should get you a bite if they are around. Overall the tog fishing on the rocks has been producing a lot of shorts and some keepers. Inshore trolling has been off and on good. We saw a good amount of Spanish mackerel and smaller mahi over the past two weeks and this week the false albacore were out in full force in about 70 feet of water. They may not be good table fare but they are fun to catch. I had good friend bill and my son Christopher out Sunday for an inshore troll trip and they played catch and release with falsies all morning. A couple bluefish in the mix in closer on the bait pods. Daisy chains and clark spoons got the bites. If the water cools off a few degrees we should see more action from the Spanish and bluefin again inshore. Overtime Sportfishing Capt Dave did a solo trip today and went for a boat ride. He was rewarded with a beautiful wahoo and then stopped and made a couple drifts to quickly box up his limit of flounder. Inshore and midshore fishing is pretty good with a good mixture of fish.
