Data centers are attracting billions in capital. But every dollar still needs a reason. A green roof, living wall, bioswale or ecological landscape should never be added simply because it looks sustainable. What problem is it solving? Stormwater? Heat? Energy? Biodiversity? Resilience? What does it cost? What is the measurable outcome? And what is the potential lifecycle and financial value of that investment? LIIP gives developers and the institutions financing these massive projects a way to evaluate those questions before the technology is selected and the capital is committed. Don’t finance “green.” Finance an outcome you can understand, measure and defend.

If your project has a sustainability budget, the first question shouldn't be, “Where should we put the green roof?” or “How big should the living wall be?”

The first question should be much more important:

What do we need this investment to accomplish?

Maybe the priority is reducing stormwater runoff. Maybe it's heat mitigation, energy performance, biodiversity, carbon, resilience or water reuse. Maybe the owner needs to satisfy specific sustainability objectives while also demonstrating lifecycle value and a measurable return on the investment.

Whatever the objective, the product should come later.

That's the thinking behind the Living Infrastructure Intelligence Platform (LIIP) software. LIIP allows us to begin with the project, its objectives and its budget, then model and compare different living infrastructure scenarios based on the results they are expected to produce.
