Today, we join together in honoring the life and legacy of Mr. Otis Lee Smart, Jr.

Coach Smart was more than our Athletic Director—he was a mentor, a leader, and a true Wildcat whose dedication to our student-athletes, coaches, and school community will never be forgotten. His passion, guidance, and unwavering commitment helped shape countless lives, both on and off the field.

As family and friends gather today to celebrate his life, we extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the Smart family. May God’s peace and comfort surround you during this difficult time.

Your Wildcat legacy will live on in every player, coach, and student whose life you touched.

Today, I was honored to present a Resolution of Mourning in recognition and remembrance of Coach Otis Lee Smart, Jr., whose extraordinary life and legacy left an indelible mark on Augusta and the State of Georgia.

For more than four decades, Coach Smart shaped the lives of countless young people as an educator, mentor, coach, and leader. His remarkable achievements on the basketball court, track, and football field were matched only by his unwavering commitment to developing character, inspiring excellence, and opening doors of opportunity for generations of student-athletes.

Beyond athletics, Coach Smart’s service to our community and state—including his leadership with the Georgia Lottery Corporation and the 1996 Olympic Games—demonstrated a lifelong dedication to public service and education.

On behalf of the City of Augusta, we extend our deepest condolences to the Smart family, the Lucy Craft Laney family, his former students and athletes, and all whose lives were touched by this remarkable man.

Coach Smart’s legacy will live on in every life he inspired and every community he helped strengthen. May we continue to honor his memory by striving to lead, mentor, and serve others with the same passion and purpose that defined his life.
