Color Analysis Secret: Every Shade Has an Equivalent

Have you ever seen a color everywhere in stores, loved it, and then put it on and thought, "this isn't working"?

It's easy to decide that color just isn't for you. But most of the time, the color itself isn't the problem. It's the version of it.

You don't have to skip a trending color just because it isn't in your season. Every shade in the store has an equivalent that works for your palette.

As a stylist, I look at three simple dials:

1️⃣ Depth: how light or dark the color is. A deep chocolate brown and a soft caramel are the same color family at different depths.

2️⃣ Temperature: how warm or cool it is. A golden olive and a cooler sage sit on opposite sides of the same green.

3️⃣ Vibrancy: how clear or muted it is. A bright, clean rust and a soft, dusty terracotta are close cousins, but they look very different against your skin.

Turn just one of those dials, and a color that wasn't working for you can suddenly look like it was made for you.

The hard part is knowing where YOUR dials sit. Are you deeper or lighter? Warmer or cooler? Do clear colors make you glow, or do soft, muted ones look more natural on you?

That's exactly what I map out in a Radiance Color Analysis. Once you know your depth, temperature, and vibrancy, you can walk into any store, see any trend, and know right away which version is yours. No more guessing, and no more pieces that never leave the closet.

Color Analysis: The Secret to Wearing Any Color in YOUR Season

Have you ever fallen in love with a color, then been told it isn't in your season?

Here's the good news: you usually don't have to give it up. You just need your version of it.

Every color has an equivalent in every palette. Let's use chocolate brown, one of the most popular colors this fall.

❄️ If you're a winter, look for a more neutral dark brown. Deep and rich, without the golden warmth.

🌊 If you're a summer, look for a brown that's a little cooler and more muted, softer and slightly grayed.

🌷 If you're a spring, look for a brown that's lighter but still warm, like a caramel or soft toffee.

What changes from one version to the next comes down to three things:
• Depth: how light or dark the color is
• Temperature: how warm or cool it is
• Clarity: how bright or muted it is

Adjust one or more of those, and almost any color can work in your season. That's how you can follow a trend, or wear a color you love, without it working against you.

In a Radiance Color Analysis, I show my clients exactly which version of each color is theirs, so shopping stops being guesswork.

Color Analysis: Not an Autumn? How to Make Fall Colors Work for You

Walk into almost any store this month and you'll see the same thing: racks of warm, dark, muted colors. Rust, olive, mustard, chocolate.

If you're an autumn, that's wonderful. Those are your colors.

But if you're not, it can feel like fall shopping just wasn't made for you. You either buy colors that don't quite work, or you skip the season altogether and stay in what you wore all summer.

Here's the good news. Every season shares something with autumn, and that's your way in.

❄️ If you're a winter, you're already dark. Lean into the deep colors in your palette, like charcoal, deep plum, and pine. Just soften them a little, going slightly less vibrant than you might in winter.

🌷 If you're a spring, you're already warm, just like autumn, only lighter. Reach for the medium hues in your palette, the warm tones that sit between your brightest spring colors and the deeper fall shades.

🌊 If you're a summer, you're already muted. Lean into the soft, dusty colors in your palette, and go a shade or two deeper than you'd wear in July.

You don't have to become an autumn to enjoy fall. You just borrow the part of autumn you already share.

Not sure which season you are? That's exactly what a Radiance Color Analysis is for.

Color Analysis: Gold or Silver? The Quick Wrist Test

Have you ever put on a necklace or a watch and felt like it just didn't look right on you, even though there was nothing wrong with it?

Very often, it isn't the piece. It's the metal.

As a stylist, one of the first things I look at is whether gold or silver works with someone's natural coloring. Metals sit right against your skin, so they either make it look clear and bright, or a little flat and tired.

Here's a quick clue you can check right now.

Turn your wrist over and look at your veins in natural daylight, near a window.

If they look mostly blue, you likely have a cool undertone. Silver, platinum, and white gold will usually look crisp and bright on you.

If they look mostly green, or green with purple, you likely have a warm undertone. Gold, brass, and rose gold will usually look rich and natural on you.

One honest note: the vein test is a starting point, not a final answer. Lighting, skin depth, and your hair and eye color all play a part. That's why in a full color analysis, I look at everything together, not just one clue.

But it's a great place to start, and it might explain why some of your jewelry gets worn every day while other pieces sit in the drawer.

So tell me: gold or silver? I'd love to know what you see.

And if you'd like to know your exact colors, from metals to the shades you wear closest to your face, comment COLOR and I'll send you the details on Radiance Color Analysis.

Shop with a Stylist: The Slip Skirt I Left & the Jeans I Love

A pretty skirt still has to work with your shape. This chocolate-brown slip skirt has no waistband to hold its line, and the lace hem makes it look like a slip instead of something to wear out. I left it.

The jeans stayed. The Reformation Blair bootcut is one I come back to again and again.

Shop with a Stylist: Fall Wardrobe—What I Kept, What I Left, & Why

3 fall outfits. What works, what doesn't, and why.

As a stylist, I check three things every time I try something on: color contrast, proportion, and undertone. Here's what I found in the fitting room this week.

Mustard turtleneck + cranberry pants — both are perfect fall colors on their own, but they don't match my contrast level paired together. Great pieces, wrong pairing.

A fitted boatneck top with wide-leg trousers — this proportion always works, and the boatneck alone is a fall capsule essential.

Bootcut jeans + a ch*****ne blouse — the jean fit is perfect, but that ch*****ne tone is too cool for my undertone.

This is exactly what I walk clients through: not just does it fit, but does the color work for you and does the proportion flatter your frame.

Shop With a Stylist: Fitting Room Audits

3 pieces. Only 1 passes the test.

As a stylist, I don't just try things on and see how they look — I check three things every time: the proportion, the color, and the fabric. Most people skip past all three and wonder why an outfit doesn't quite work.

Today's fitting room audit:

A black cardigan — the tailored cut and clean button detail make it look far more expensive than it actually is. This one's a keep.

A yellow cardigan — beautiful color on its own, but it fights my warm undertone instead of working with it. Color matters more than the trend.

A pair of morel colored trousers — the subtle fading in the fabric makes them read casual instead of elevated. Small detail, big difference in how the whole outfit lands.

This is exactly what I look for with clients: not just does it fit, but does the color work for you, does the cut flatter your proportion, and does the fabric hold up.

Which one would you buy? Comment GUIDE and I'll send you my free Get Dressed in 5 Minutes guide.

A white shirt is the easiest piece to get wrong without even realizing it.

Most of us reach for whatever neckline is easiest to find — that's Basic. It's fine. It's just not doing anything for you.

Watch what happens when the neckline is actually corrected for your proportion. Same white shirt, completely different impression. That's Elevated.

As a stylist, this is one of the fastest, lowest-cost changes you can make to your entire wardrobe — you don't need new clothes, you need the right neckline for you.

Comment ELEVATE if you need help elevating your outfits and I'll send you a link.

You get your color palette. Every green that actually works on you, laid out right in front of you.

Then you get to the store — and that exact green is nowhere on the rack. So which one is actually closest? That is the part nobody prepares you for going into a color analysis session.

I lived this before I ever became a stylist. I had the palette. I still stood in the fitting room second-guessing myself.

That is exactly why I train my clients to actually see color — not just hand them a palette and send them off to figure out the rest alone. A color analysis session gives you the framework. Learning to use it confidently, under real store lighting, with real clothes that do not come pre-sorted by undertone, is the part that takes a trained eye.

If you have ever second-guessed a color you were sure about a week earlier, you are not doing anything wrong — you have just reached the point in the process where a session alone is not quite enough, and ongoing support is.

You do not need a new wardrobe to feel put-together this fall. You need to know which few pieces actually do the work.

Here's one base outfit — a simple tee and jeans — taken through four completely different fall looks. A cardigan here. Boots swapped in there. One accessory changing the whole mood of the outfit. Same foundation every single time.

This is exactly the kind of capsule thinking I build with my styling clients: fewer pieces, more outfits, less decision fatigue every single morning.

If you have been standing in your closet this week feeling like you have 'nothing to wear' for fall, save this post before you go shopping for anything new. Chances are you already own more of what you need than you think.
