How should women determine if they did well in their salary negotiations?
A combination of confidence in your number, clarity of what you want, and the boldness to ask.
Then, calibrate your negotiation range by asking others in your industry how they negotiated, what their pay progression has been, and what they are targeting in their next role.
The job is one thing.
But your life, your time, your energy all deserve to be factored in.
Knowing your worth is best served by maximizing your ask by getting all the data and context you can before you negotiate. The more data and context, the better you will know how the first offer compares to your value.

Every salary negotiation is like a kitchen remodel...
It deserves at least one good counter :)
Your mission is to have a philosophy of what you are worth and be able to back it up. This is the foundation of justifying why you are worth more than being offered.
I spoke to Lane, a Recruiter who would know, about her thoughts on positioning yourself higher in the salary range.
Even if you "over ask", companies will meet you where at the intersection of where your value is AND where you articulate it.
Many women don’t even ask. Be the one who does.
Every career has a “this is my moment” chapter.
For her, it was when the company asked her to stay—but she needed something new.
So she wrote the job she wanted, explained why she was the one to do it, and researched what it should pay.
Then she pitched it.
That’s what self-advocacy looks like.
You don't have to wait for someone to hand you your dream role. You build it and then ask to be paid in alignment to it's value.
You don’t have to change jobs to negotiate better pay or perks.
When you’ve made a difference, leverage it.
Show your impact and ask for more—salary, benefits, or flexibility. Take the lens of "what would I make if I was hired for this role externally rather than promoted?"
It’s all up for discussion.

It is okay to accept a salary lower than you negotiated for if the opportunity will allow your to learn and grow your skills. But it is important to communicate your long-term goals.
I spoke with the founder of an Austin start up about talking to your manager for an early performance review and salary adjustments.
Then follow through, show your value, and use the skills they hired you for when it's time to renegotiate.
Open conversations lead to better outcomes.
Ladies, confidence isn’t optional when it comes to negotiating your salary.
It’s not about arrogance, it’s about knowing your value and asking for it.
You bring the skills, the work ethic, and the results; just ensure the first result is the one for yourself...an salary you didn't wish you asked for more.

What is the one thing SXSW has likely never had a discussion on before?
I think it is a dedicated session on salary negotiation. And not an inspirational talk. I mean a real tactical workshop on how the game works and the opportunity for attendees to ask their most hard hitting questions about how to advocate for their worth. Especially in whatever state the job market will be in March 2025.
Which is why I am excited to announce the application I submitted to do a salary negotiation workshop was accepted for public voting by SXSW! This means the process has just started though.
I would like your help in making sure the message is heard by SXSW that you want this type of knowledge.
Will you support by clicking the link below to upvote and add a comment about why you think this workshop would be a game changer to have?
Your votes and comments are greatly appreciated.

Had an amazing time last night at the Austin Under 40 Awards gala! Supporting a great cause and getting to meet a lot of the individuals here in Austin who are on the cutting edge of their industries and movements.
It was also awesome to meet members of the Young Women’s Alliance in person who I just gave a presentation to last week on salary negotiatiation.
If you have an organization of professionals that would like leadership development or specific strategic tactical guidance on things like salary negotiation, I’m available to speak.

I’m pretty hell bent on teaching you how to negotiate your salary in tech and Fortune 500 companies.
I find it unacceptable that we don’t learn how to do one of the most important things of our careers in college. Imagine paying through the nose for an education that lasts four years only to be completely unprepared for the very first and most important conversation of your career. Not to mention time and time again there after. It’s like buying a brand new car and the moment you get off the lot it won’t accelerate like you expect it to.
Not to exalt myself, but I really feel like a superhero who’s here to try and save the day. Except I save the day by teaching you how to save your own day.
So you’re the superhero.
I’m just going to unlock what’s already inside of you. Which is your ability to use your voice and ask at the right time, in the right order, for the right things so you get paid what you’re worth. LFG 🚀
