In Commemoration of Ed Parker: A Legacy of Unity and Devotion
Today, we pay tribute to Edmond K. Parker, the Grand Master and founder of American Kenpo. Although many of us practicing his art never had the opportunity to meet him, his profound influence resonates deeply within the hearts of those he has touched. Mr. Parker's enduring legacy extends beyond the techniques he taught, as it is rooted in the spirit of unity, respect, and devotion that he instilled in the martial arts community.
As one of the most influential martial artists of modern times, Mr. Parker's passing was a profound loss. Nevertheless, his impact continues to shape us into the martial artists we are today. It is remarkable to feel a deep connection to someone we have never met, yet who has played a pivotal role in shaping our journeys.
Today, we come together, setting aside our differences and the politics that often divide us. Mr. Parker held dear the values of unity and respect, and it is our responsibility to preserve the legacy he initiated. We must honor not only his memory but also the families he left behind, including both his biological and extended Kenpo family.
I assumed the role of head instructor at Austin Kenpo Karate in 1997, and I have been training in the art of Kenpo since 1989. I feel the weight of his absence acutely. Despite recently having to close my studio, my passion for teaching remains unwavering. I miss the daily connection with my students, the camaraderie on the mat, and the lessons shared.
To all the lives Mr. Parker has touched, both directly and indirectly, I pay my deepest respects. Let us unite today in honoring his legacy, ensuring that the values he cherished continue to thrive in our community. Together, we can keep the spirit of Kenpo alive and vibrant as we remember and celebrate the extraordinary life of Ed Parker.
