We participate in the daily practice, ambition, and enjoyment of running. You can run with us.

Our performance sharpens and our enjoyment expands when we tune in to ourselves, so we're in hot pursuit of more deeply integrating our bodies and minds.

The 6th Annual Holiday Run Crew is now open, and I've aptly renamed is The Holiday *Regulated* Crew, because that's what I want to invite you to prioritize this season.

Here’s the tl;dr of my recent
Nervous System for Rec Runners masterclass:

The state of your nervous system directly influences the narrative you have about yourself, others, and the world.

In other words, “your state shapes your story.”

So, what happens to your winter running choices,
to your office parties, festive soirees, and family gatherings,
to your list of of 10 to 207ish Holiday Things To Do

…when you’ve prioritized being in a **felt state** of safety and connection?

Winter running becomes one of many regulating tools you use to help yourself move up that hierarchy ladder to your seasonal priority of safety & connection (not another boulder to push up the holiday hill.)

Office parties, festive soirees, & family gatherings become relaxed moments to celebrate and enjoy (not events you have to dread or feel like you have perform at.)

Your list of 10-207ish Holiday Things To Do become ways to connect, share, and express yourself (not things between you and calm rest.)

All because you *experience yourself* as happy, active, interested, loving, & loveable

Remember: running is always your arena to practice the values and qualities you want to cultivate outside of running, too.

I’ll guide you through using it to cultivate our crew's priority this holiday season: a felt sense of safety & connection.

You’ll feel it inside your running practice and out. (Fa la la la la la)

🪄 ❤️‍🔥 For you, Rec Runner.

This spring, a run is a *target practice* sport.

It's making *one of many*
sh*tty ceramic vases.

It's a *keep-going*, with your movement, with your ease, with your effort, with your pauses to catch your breath, to pet the dog, to smell the flowers.

It's locker room teams-vibes before the game. It's pedicures & potluck.

It's an opening ceremony, and ever time, when it begins, it's perfect.

CLEAR alignment is different than perfect alignment.

It involves taking a moment to settle and check in with yourself, rather than simply "powering through" or "opting out."

It also means listening to what your different Parts are thinking and feeling, and being willing to *adjust* accordingly.

Some days, alignment might look like running as planned.

And on other days, it might look like resting and reminding the part of you managing your relationship to running that this is *still* an acceptable choice in reaching your goal to X and is in fact very aligned with your commitment to Y this season.

Aligning (and re-aligning, and re-aligning) is a process, and means being willing to adjust your *self talk* or your *logistics* (or sometimes your self talk *and* logistics).

Once you have your *goal* and a *clear idea* of what you're committing to in the season ahead, your task
(whether you are an elite runner or a complete beginner)
is to align your self-talk and logistics on a daily and weekly basis.

But here's the thing…

Just because you're *clear* on your goal and have actionable steps towards accomplishing that goal, doesn't mean that life will go as planned.

Life gets busy–
It's your period week.
You had a zinger of a conversation with your BFF...

and suddenly, you find yourself second guessing your commitment to your goal, or the goal in its entirety.

In these moments, it might be tempting to throw the whole goal out.

But here's where I would recommend taking a moment to *breathe,* cool down, and give yourself a second to get into *clear alignment.*

Maybe you just need a breather.

Or maybe you *do* need to reevaluate your goal.

Either way, making a decision out of methodical, clear alignment is always going to feel better (at least in the longterm) than reacting to life's unforeseeable circumstances.

Outer expectations (meet work deadlines, answer a request from a friend)

And inner expectations (keep a New Year’s resolution, start meditating).

According to Gretchen Rubin, your response to expectations determines your “Tendency”

That is, whether you’re an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel.

The good news?

Once you know your tendency, you can harness its strength.

This time of year, there's more “2023 goal-setting tips” floating around out there than I could possibly count.

And most of them go something like:

Get clear about your starting point “A”,
then SMART goal your way to Z.

But, I’m guessing that way of goal setting only appeals to maaaaybe 1/4 of people trying to achieve their goals.

So, during this time of year when "New Year's Resolutions" are taking the world by storm I want to remind you that there’s not *just* a *goal* that’s right for you, there’s also a *way* to *pursue* it that might be specific to you, too.

Interested in learning about the way *you* relate to goal setting and the expectations that come with it?

A habit goal is designed around running, well, habitually—

as a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.

It invites you to tune into your experience of the practice each week, and to iterate based on what you want and need.

It calls you to reach for it consistently in rain or shine or not, and in doing so, sharpen a little skill called agency— real agency, from making real choices about what, when, who, where, and why you’ll run.

Sound like a goal you would be interested in exploring in your own running practice?

If you were sitting in front of me I would ask you to turn towards your own Running. Personify it if you can.

What is your running asking for in the season ahead?

Don’t think about it too hard.

What comes to mind?

What does your gut say?

Is it to run further?

Faster?

Is it to develop kind consistency?

For an experience, like a retreat?

Working towards kind consistency will look very different than the type of running that will shape fast running, which will look very different than the type of running that will shape far running.

Those goals require different skills and strategies, and fall into two different types:

Habit Goal or Achievement Goal.

We can probably all conjure up an image of a passionate runner.

It’s an archetypal kind of runner who takes up so much space in our line of running vision.

It’s full-on.
It’s extreme.
It’s intense.

It's admirable, sure, but this archetype is also inherently exclusive, and leaves us even-keeled mortals wondering how deep our own well of resilience is–  how deep our own love of running is.

Do I even belong in this space?

Here's one thing to remember:

Yes, working hard for something you love is called passion.

AND making space for something you’re interested in is called curiosity.

AND making space for something you’re learning to enjoy is called relationship-building.

And I’m ok with being called a person who is interested in running.

On the blog now, "“2 Types of Running Goals, even if you're not a 'Passionate' Runner."
