The Stark Center archives are home to thousands of photos and rare memorabilia related to physical culture and sports. Special thank you to the Rader Collection for this photo of "The Big Four." These four heavyweights were dominant in Olympic Weightlifting in the 1940s and 1950s. John Davis won gold in 1948 and was virtually unbeatable in the 1930s and '40s. Jim Bradford won silver in 1952 & 1960 and was always in the medal mix. Norb Schemansky won gold in 1952 and was the first to win four Olympic medals and multiple world championships. Paul Anderson won gold in 1956 and was considered the strongest man who ever lived. Please visit our website and read more about the history of strongmen and strongwomen. You can also visit the Stark Center in person on the University of Texas campus in the North End Zone of the DKR Memorial Stadium to see our museum exhibitions, fine arts gallery, and reading room. Admission is free of charge to the public, M-F 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Congratulations to Farah O'Keefe on her NCAA Individual Women's Golf title!! Farah is a hometown talent out of Anderson High School in Austin. Unlike many of her fellow competitors who traveled the world on the junior golf tour, Farah played mostly locally honing her skills. Her title is a true testament to her mental toughness and ability. Cinderella story! Congratulations!!

During the 1914 season, Len Barrel scored 121 points, totaling 14 touchdowns, one field goal, and 34 extra points, marking one of the most prolific scoring campaigns of the era. It was a record that stood for 83 years, until Ricky Williams broke it. Barrel was also among the first Texas players to rush for more than 100 yards in a single game, helping set early offensive standards for the program. His cleats, which did all that rushing and scoring, are on display in the Stark Center lobby. These rare photos of Len Barrel from the 1914 season were recently gifted to the Stark Center by local collector Mike White.

Doug Young was the IPF Powerlifting World Champion and AAU US National Champion Powerlifter three times in the 1970s. His records--personal best 722-pound squat (327kg), 612-pound bench press (278kg), and 805-pound deadlift (365kg)--and his immensely muscular physique made him an easy choice to be featured on the cover of Terry Todd's quintessential Inside Powerlifting, first published in 1978.

Former UT Powerlifting Team member, Ian Bell, dropped by the Stark Center recently to say hello to some old friends. Ian is still competing in Powerlifting with a personal best squat of 909.4 pounds and a deadlift of 862 pounds. He's currently living and training in Aviano, Italy. Pictured with Dr. Kim Beckwith on the left and, of course, Dr. Jan Todd on the right. You, too, can visit the Stark Center for free Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm!
