🐴❤️ DOES AN OLD HORSE NEED TO STOP EXERCISING?
Not necessarily.
A horse being in their late 20s—or even older—doesn't automatically mean they should stop exercising or being lightly ridden.
For a senior horse who is comfortable and physically capable, appropriate exercise can help:
🐎 Maintain muscle and strength
🐎 Keep joints moving
🐎 Reduce stiffness
🐎 Support circulation and digestion
🐎 Maintain balance and coordination
🐎 Preserve cardiovascular fitness
🐎 Provide mental stimulation
🐎 Help maintain mobility and independence
Exercise doesn't have to mean hard work.
For a geriatric horse, it might mean turnout, hand-walking, groundwork, easy trail rides, or short periods of light riding.
Even some loss of topline does not automatically mean a horse should never be exercised. Gentle, appropriate movement may help preserve the muscle and mobility the horse still has.
❤️ The question shouldn't simply be, “How old is this horse?”
The better questions are:
Is the horse comfortable?
Is the horse willing?
Is the horse maintaining an appropriate body condition?
Is the activity appropriate for that individual horse?
Does the horse recover comfortably afterward?
An elderly horse should never be pushed through pain, significant lameness, exhaustion, or declining condition.
But if that senior horse still enjoys getting out and moving, appropriate exercise can be an important part of maintaining strength, mobility, mental well-being, and quality of life.
🐴 Old doesn't automatically mean incapable.
Sometimes movement is part of aging well.

These horse's are having as much fun as the kids 30 minutes in the arena doesn't seem like enough in their eyes. Old horses and kids. Simi retirement for me and the horse's. I love when parents post videos of theirs riding and having fun. We all start somewhere. I read somewhere that the average person that retires and does nothing dies in 3 years. Just what I read.

Memories
I got to FaceTime with Sarah, Cowgirl and Splash tonight. They made it to Washington in one piece. Doesn't get dark there until 10:30pm. What a beautiful part of the country, and how lucky the horse's are to be with such a good family.
