Huge loss for the wrestling community yesterday. North High heavyweight wrestler and football player Wyatt Burch passed away unexpectedly. When the Shafter wrestling team was hit with tragedy, the North High program stepped up and showed their support and proved that the wrestling community in Bakersfield is one big family. Now it is our time to show our support for North High wrestling and Wyatt’s family. There has been a go fund me page created to help the family pay for the funeral and anything else during this difficult time. They are already more than halfway towards their goal. Let’s help them get there!

The off season is underway for GWC! This past weekend the club was in Fresno for the CAUSAW Folkstyle State Championships. After two long days of wrestling, the club earned two medals! Sophomore James House led the way with a 5th Place finish at 220lbs. Freshman Tony Ayon impressed with a 6th Place finish at 94lbs after bumping up a weight class! Overall, it was a great start to the club season. Now on to Freestyle!

Mark your calendars and help support as he continues his fight against leukemia. The are hosting Nick and his family on Saturday, March 28th at their game against the Colorado Eagles for Blackout Cancer night! Each ticket cost $20, but $3 for every ticket sold goes directly to Nick and his family to help pay for all medical costs. All tickets can be purchased online from the link posted on the poster above. Please help us spread the word! Let’s pack the arena and show Nick he has our full support!

Thank you to for all of their support for as he continues his fight against leukemia. Nick was chosen as a honorary captain of the team for today’s dual meet against Arizona State. The team went out of their way to show Nick that he is not alone in his fight against cancer. The wrestling community came together today in a big way!

Congratulations to our 2020 DIII Valley medalists. Abelino Rivera finished unbeaten at 108lbs and is a Valley Champion! Christian Garza finished strong in 3rd Place at 122lbs, and is now a 3X Valley Championship medalist in his career at Shafter High. James House entered the tournament unseeded at 197lbs and finished in 5th place for his first Valley medal as a sophomore. All three wrestlers have automatically qualified for the Central Section Masters meet next weekend for an opportunity to punch their tickets to state! Carlos Martinez managed to finish in 8th place at 147lbs, and is an alternate for the Masters meet next weekend.

Congratulations to Carlos Martinez for being named the Varsity SSL Champion at 145lbs! After taking a year off of wrestling, it has been a season filled with ups and downs. He has continued to overcome adversity through his hard work and dedication, and is now the BEST wrestler at 145lbs in the league. Congrats Carlos!

The SSL JV and Girls Championships were held today at McFarland High School! The JV boys finished in second place as a team. Mauricio Sanchez, Zaid Hussein, and Adan Vargas went undefeated in the day and are now SSL CHAMPIONS. All Shafter wrestlers finished in the top 3! Great way to end the season for our JV boys. Our lady generals also finished second as a team, and will continue wrestling in the postseason next weekend!

The dual last night lived up to the hype. It was an intense dual that lasted until the end, but the varsity team lost to Wasco 37-25. Not the result the team wanted, but the season is not over. The JV team will wrestle in the SSL Championships tomorrow as our varsity wrestlers prepare for the postseason. The highlight of the night was the Wasco wrestling community taking a moment to honor our very own Nick Garza who is continuing to fight cancer, and his father who was there to accept the honorary plaque that was made for Nick. Thank you to everyone who was involved in honoring Nick. Last night was about two teams leaving it all on the line for an SSL Championship, but also a reminder that some things in life are bigger than wrestling. It was awesome to see two rivals come together and show support for each other.

The biggest dual meet of the season is finally here. Shafter vs Wasco this Thursday 2/6 in Wasco. Shafter Wrestling will claim a share of the SSL Championship with a win! The team needs your support. Let’s pack their gym with blue and gold! This event always lives up to the hype and never disappoints... You won’t want to miss it.
