Parents,
Here’s some truth. Hockey is amazing. Not because of rankings, trophies, or team names, but because of the smiles, the joy, the rush of the game, and the love kids feel when they step on the ice. That spark, that pure excitement, is everything. When it’s gone, nothing else matters.
Right now, the end of the season and upcoming tryout season feels like a hurricane. The hype, the chatter, the comparisons, the travel, the tiers, it is chaos off the ice. Too often, that chaos leaks onto the ice. Kids feel it. Parents feel it. And suddenly, the game stops being fun.
So here’s some important advice… turn the noise off. Mute it completely. Don’t listen to what other parents say. Don’t chase rankings, labels, or team names. Instead, listen to your heart. More importantly, listen to your child.
Build from joy. Build from passion. Let the love of the game be the foundation. When kids are excited, smiling, and having fun, development happens naturally. Hard work doesn’t feel like a chore. Skill, toughness, and confidence grow without pressure, step by step, shift by shift, one practice at a time. That’s how players truly get better.
Your child is thriving when they’re challenged and still smiling. That’s the sweet spot. That’s when they’re hooked. That’s when growth happens without burnout. Hard work, skill, and hockey IQ all matter, but if the smile isn’t there, none of it sticks.
Private lessons, skill clinics, camps, Off-Ice Training… they are all good. Every one of them can be valuable. Think of them as tools added to a development toolbox. Used at the right time, for the right reasons, they can help a player grow. But without a smile, that toolbox might as well be left open, just waiting to be knocked over. Joy keeps everything steady. Joy makes the tools work.
Play at the right level. Not the highest level. Not the easiest level. Not the team with the flashiest name or coolest swag. The right level is where your child gets the puck, gets ice time, takes shots, and builds confidence. All while being challenged, pushed just enough outside their comfort zone to grow. If they dominate, you’ll know when it’s time to push. Until then, stay local. Stay where the reps are. Stay where development is natural and fun. Good players always get found.
You’ll know when it’s time to push, when to start ‘training’, when workouts make sense, when camps and clinics are the right fit. And even then, it should come with a smile. If the joy is gone, step back and reset. That’s not quitting, that’s protecting the game.
It’s okay to get cut. It’s okay to not make the team. For some kids, that’s actually better than making a roster where they won’t play, won’t touch the puck, and won’t grow. Development happens on the ice, not on the bench. Environment matters more than labels, rankings, or hype.
Hockey is a rollercoaster. The ride gets more intimidating as kids get older. But the ride should always start with joy. Step by step. Shift by shift. Build from passion. Work hard when it’s time to work hard. Smile when it’s time to smile. Protect the love of the game.
Every day on the ice is a chance to fall in love with hockey all over again. Don’t let the noise ruin it.
