The care of fine china and crystal was one of the most important lessons I learned during my butler training in the UK.
Fine pieces require more than careful handling. They require knowledge, patience, and respect. China should be protected from chips, harsh detergents, sudden temperature changes, and improper stacking. Fine crystal should always be washed carefully by hand, never placed in a dishwasher.
One of my first positions after graduating was as Head Steward aboard a 345-foot private yacht. We had just completed a wonderful dinner party, and another staff member had stepped in to help with the cleanup.
Later, I noticed that several of the Saint-Louis crystal glasses were missing.
When I asked where they were, the staff member casually replied, “We put them in the spare dishwasher.”
I immediately made my way to the pantry, with the owner of the yacht following closely behind me. Just as we entered the room, we heard the unmistakable tinkling sound of breaking glass coming from inside the dishwasher.
I opened the door, and there before us was a dishwasher filled with shattered Saint-Louis crystal. Each glass was valued at approximately $400.
The look on Madame’s face is something I will never forget. She instructed me to dismiss the staff member responsible.
There were many lessons in that moment.
Never assume that everyone understands how to care for valuable possessions. Staff must be properly trained, expectations must be clearly communicated, and household procedures must be followed consistently.
Good intentions are not always enough. In private service, knowledge, accountability, and attention to detail matter.
Fine china and crystal may look effortless on a beautifully set table, but preserving them requires experience and care behind the scenes.

People often ask me what makes a great House Manager.
There are many qualities, but the best House Managers I’ve worked with share a few important traits: they can read the room, remain calm under pressure, adapt quickly, and genuinely enjoy solving problems before they become problems.
Private service is unpredictable. Plans change, vendors run late, schedules shift, and unexpected situations arise. A great House Manager keeps everything moving without allowing the household or family to feel the stress behind the scenes.
They are highly organized, but they also understand that organization alone is not enough. The role requires discretion, emotional intelligence, sound judgment, humility, leadership, and what I call a born-to-serve mentality.
There is an important difference between being born to serve and feeling that you are “just a servant.”
People outside the private service industry sometimes misunderstand the profession. Exceptional service is not about being less than anyone else. It is about taking pride in making life run more smoothly, anticipating needs, protecting privacy, and creating an environment where others feel comfortable, supported, and at ease.
The truth is, we are all in service to someone or something, our clients, our families, our colleagues, our communities, or our purpose.
It is not an easy role, but for the right person, it can be one of the most rewarding careers in private service.

One of my favorite parts of estate management was preparing a home for the family’s return.
There was always a quiet satisfaction in completing that final walkthrough, fresh flowers in place, the lighting adjusted, the kitchen stocked with their favorite items, and everything exactly where it should be.
My favorite homecomings were during the December holidays.
My clients would return from Florida to their Maryland home, where the florist had spent days decorating both inside and out. From the moment they entered the property, the tree-lined driveway drew their eyes toward the illuminated fir trees, while the courtyard sparkled with thousands of lights.
Inside, the fireplaces were crackling, holiday music was playing, and hot toddies were waiting on a silver tray.
Most families never see everything that happens before they arrive, and that is exactly how it should be.
When they walk through the front door and everything simply feels warm, welcoming, and effortless, you know you have done your job well.
Those remain some of the most rewarding moments of my career in private service.

Over the years, I’ve learned that a good vendor is worth holding onto.
The best vendors do more than provide quality work. They communicate clearly, arrive when promised, respond when needed, and make your job easier rather than creating more follow-up.
Whether it’s a contractor, landscaper, florist, electrician, plumber, or maintenance company, having trusted professionals you can genuinely rely on makes an enormous difference in how smoothly a home or estate operates.
As an estate manager, I always believed those relationships deserved to be appreciated. At the end of each year, we hosted a holiday gathering for our vendors and presented them with a small gift. Throughout the year, we also remembered birthdays and occasionally sent a dinner gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, especially when someone had rearranged their schedule or helped us at the last minute.
These were simple gestures, but they meant something.
When an emergency arose, and we needed someone immediately, those same vendors were always willing to answer the call. Strong vendor relationships are not built overnight. They are built through trust, respect, loyalty, and appreciation, and they are well worth the investment.
Follow along for more practical insights and lessons from my years in private service and estate management.

Over the years, I’ve walked into beautifully organized homes where finding one simple item could still take 20 minutes.
That’s usually when I realize the problem isn’t organization, it’s the lack of a reliable system.
A good household inventory system doesn’t need to be complicated. It simply helps everyone know where supplies are kept, what’s running low, and what needs replacing before it becomes an issue.
It’s one of those behind-the-scenes systems that nobody notices, until it isn’t there.
How do you keep track of household essentials in your home or workplace? I’d love to hear what works for you.

My journey with polishing silver began long before my formal butler training.
As a child, my mother would ask me to clean the few silver pieces we had at home. Then, at 16, when I entered the world of five-star hotels as a commis waiter, polishing silver became part of my daily responsibility.
I will admit, I hated it at the time.
Before every meal service, each knife, fork, and spoon had to be inspected and hand-polished before it could be placed on the table. No water spots, fingerprints, tarnish, or, dare I say it, food left behind from the previous service.
There is nothing more disappointing than sitting down for a beautiful meal and immediately noticing dirty or poorly polished flatware.
During my butler training, I came to understand that silver polishing was not simply another task to complete. It required patience, care, and respect for the pieces themselves.
Looking back, it taught me something far more valuable: excellence is often found in the jobs that nobody notices.
Caring for silver is about preserving craftsmanship, respecting the home, and maintaining a standard consistently, not only when someone is watching.
I still believe that small habits reveal a great deal about a professional. When you take pride in the smallest details, people naturally learn to trust you with the larger responsibilities.
What skill seemed insignificant when you first learned it, but has stayed with you throughout your career?

Did you know that an indoor pool needs attention even when no one is using it?
One of my clients had a saltwater pool that he preferred to keep at a consistently warm temperature. Maintaining it properly required far more than simply keeping the water clean.
Water chemistry, temperature, humidity, ventilation, and equipment all had to be monitored carefully. Without proper oversight, an indoor pool can affect not only the water itself, but also the surrounding finishes, air quality, and structure of the home.
Having an experienced and reliable pool company available was priceless. They understood the client’s preferences, knew the property, and could respond quickly when something needed attention.
I have always found it interesting that some of the most impressive features in a home often require the greatest amount of behind-the-scenes care to keep them looking effortless.
What other area of a luxury home would you like me to take you behind the scenes of?

People often ask me what the greatest lesson was from my butler training in the UK.
There were many, but the one that has stayed with me throughout my career is this, we do not automatically accept that something cannot be done.
In private service, “no” should rarely be our first response. We give of ourselves generously, anticipate what is needed, and quietly find a way to make the seemingly impossible possible, with no fuss, no fanfare, and without seeking recognition.
The training was never simply about folding napkins or serving a formal dinner. It was about understanding that exceptional service should feel effortless. When you have planned carefully, paid attention to the smallest details, and thought several steps ahead, people may never notice everything you have done. They will simply feel comfortable, cared for, and completely at ease.
That is the standard I have carried with me throughout my career, and it remains one of the most important lessons I can pass on to anyone entering the private service industry.
