Your certification taught you how to train. 💪🏻

Who taught you what to say when a client cancels late, asks for a discount, or walks in carrying a rough day?
🤔

It’s hard for me to call myself an expert in this. But after 20+ years as a personal trainer, I realized I’ve learned things that could help new trainers build a business; and experienced trainers strengthen theirs.

So I wrote Beyond the Reps. 📘

I moved from Puerto Rico to Maine knowing no one.
I started with three clients and built from there, one relationship and one referral at a time.

This guide shares lessons about the people, boundaries, and business behind the workouts, with scripts, worksheets, and a 30-day implementation plan.

Beyond the Reps is here. 💪

After 20+ years as a trainer, I’ve learned something important:

Personal training isn’t just about training the body.

Some days, clients need a coach.
Some days, they need someone to listen.
And some days… they just need someone to remind them why they showed up.

Because at the end of the day, we’re working with people; not just bodies.

That’s the part of this job I love most. ❤️

And coaches… don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. You can care deeply about your clients without carrying everything home.

Limp Noodle Arm Update 💪🏻➡️🍜

I saw the orthopedic specialist yesterday, and unfortunately, as suspected, it looks like the long head of the biceps tendon in my right arm is officially a goner. 🫤

The good news? 🙌🏻 Since this appears to be a relatively common injury in active adults, surgery is not recommended in my case.

To be completely honest, their recommendation was basically… “Let it do its thing and wait it out.” 🤔

I’m not quite ready to accept the “just wait” part, though. I’ll be looking into Physical Therapy so I can be proactive about getting strength, function, and mobility back as I heal.

For those wondering what exactly is going on:
The long head of my biceps has lost its anchor at the shoulder. The tendon has retracted, and the hope is that it will eventually scar into place and become functional enough to compensate.
For now, though, that biceps is basically just floating around doing its best, and my right arm is noticeably weaker because of it. 💀

The important part for my clients: sessions are NOT being canceled.

We’ll continue training as scheduled. There will just be some modifications to spotting and demonstrations on my end while I work around the injury.

And if I demonstrate an exercise with one arm, please listen to the words coming out of my mouth, I probably still want you doing it with both arms. 😉😂

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, checked in, and asked how I’m doing. And especially thank you to my clients for being understanding as I make some temporary adjustments.

Hopefully, with some patience, some PT, and a little hard work, I’ll have this thing functioning a whole lot better over the next couple of months.

Until then… Coach Ruzzo is still open for business and accepting new clients for the “Holiday Rush”… yeap, sadly, winter is coming 💪🏻😎

Quick update for everyone:

Unfortunately, I’m about 90% sure I’ve ruptured my biceps tendon at the shoulder. Right now I’m just waiting to get in with an orthopedic specialist to confirm exactly what’s going on and determine the next steps.

As of now, all sessions WILL continue as scheduled. The only adjustment will be that my spotting will be minimal for the time being. That may mean we’ll keep some lifts a little lighter or stick to loads that can be safely handled by the client without requiring much assistance from me.

As soon as I have more information from the orthopedic appointment, I’ll update everyone on the diagnosis, treatment plan, and whether it will affect sessions moving forward.

Thank you all for your patience, support, and understanding. I appreciate every one of you, and I’m looking forward to getting some answers and getting back to doing what I love.

“You’re a trainer, so it’s easier for you to stay in shape.”

No, it isn’t.

I woke up at 3:00am. By the time this picture was taken, I had already coached 17 clients and put in a full day of helping others work toward their goals.

Being a trainer doesn’t magically make healthy choices easier.

I don’t think a chef gets home and wants to cook a five-course meal every night. The people who teach health and fitness still deal with the same lack of motivation, long days, sore bodies, stress, and excuses everyone else does.

The difference isn’t motivation.
The difference is priorities.

Health shouldn’t feel like a punishment or a chore. It’s not about finding the perfect workout, the perfect diet, or the perfect supplement.

It’s about consistently doing the basics:
✅ Balanced nutrition
✅ Real exercise (not just checking the box)
✅ Quality sleep
✅ Hydration

And yes, a short walk is better than doing nothing. But let’s stop pretending that a 10-minute stroll replaces strength training, cardiovascular fitness, mobility work, and all the other things that help us stay capable as we age.

The goal isn’t just to live longer.

The goal is to reach old age still able to get up from the ground without help, carry your own groceries, play with your grandkids, and remain independent.

That’s what I’m training for at 45 y/o

Even on a 3:00am start.
