While far better than the usual method of cutting tendons, bending the tail bone, etc., why do people do these things to horses???

As human beings we have the ability to say “This tradition (or style) seems silly. Let’s change it.” There’s no need to carry on doing things because “that’s the way it’s always been done”. At one point it was considered the standard that women wear enormous powdered wigs and skirts wide enough to hide several medium sized farm animals beneath too. Styles CAN be changed!

Some grooming is practically, some is ridiculous and some is inhumane. Please do better, horse people.

All it takes is few needles from a Yew to kill a horse. It is highly toxic.

The death of a Central Park carriage horse that collapsed last week while on a ride with two passengers was caused by a foreign toxic plant, according to a necropsy publicized by the union representing carriage drivers.

The Transport Workers Union of America said the horse, Deniz, was giving a ride near East 90th Street in Manhattan on June 9 when it paused to eat a shrub along the curb.

A short time later, the 16-year-old horse collapsed and died, according to the necropsy performed by Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the union said.

This comic explains, in a humerous way, what horses must feel like with a lot of riders.

A trained horse can respond to cues or aids that are understood, but has no idea what the goal or plan is, and usually get in trouble for guessing, or doing what they feel like doing at the time. Without giving clear and meaningful instructions to our horses, they don’t know what to do. Horses aren’t programmable but are constantly looking for input from a rider or handler. If it’s not given, they make something up.

Don’t get mad at your horses if you are making them guess!
