One week ago, I returned from the Rooted in Presence Silent Retreat Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Mass, the final engagement on my US tour. 🕊️
A weeklong retreat, 6 days in silence after 2 months of teaching, and I feel called to share some of my insights. (Though retreats are a gift that keep on resonating in the heart and mind. 🌱)
1. My mind is full of sh*t. 💭 The longer I sat noticing my breath, the louder the thoughts and more elaborate the fantasies, and more engaging. But an important perspective emerged: thoughts appear to be real, but that doesn’t make them true. Fantasy almost never plays out in reality, for instance. With that insight, I could decide whether to indulge the fantasy or stay with the present moment. An empowering choice. Shoutout to daren thomas magee for the caption inspiration. ✨
2. Happiness ≠ Peace ⚖️ Throughout the retreat, I felt happy and bright, but my mind was clearly not at peace, bouncing back and forth between silence and chatter. The Metta chant goes: may you be happy AND peaceful AND free from suffering (a loose translation that’s adaptable). The distinction between peace and happiness became more noticeable the more I sat. But Metta invites the possibility of having it all! And of course, as we know, it’s on the inside. 🪷
3. May Metta (Loving-Kindness) Arise 🤲 This phrase was given to me by one of the dharma teachers when I expressed that my mind felt like it was attacking me. The invitation: instead of fighting it, notice it, and when there’s space, offer a blessing. May Metta (Loving-Kindness) Arise. And so it was. And may it be of service to you too. Big thanks to Devin Berry 🙏
4. Community Is a Refuge 🫶 Every day we honored the three refuges: Buddha (the teacher), Dhamma (the teachings), and Sangha, the community that sustains the continuation of the teachings, not just through verbal expression but through action and attitude. Every day, we also offered loving-kindness to ourselves and each other, a shared mission, a shared effort, in solidarity and support of the golden silence that leads to peace, happiness, and freedom from suffering. With patience, with reverence, with care, all in perfect time. The next B
