When a student comes to me with neck tension, the neck is rarely the first place I look. That might sound strange, but it comes directly from how the body distributes effort.

Your neck sits at the top of a chain that includes your ribs, mid-back, and shoulders. When one part of that chain isn't participating the way it should, the neck can end up picking up the slack and doing more work than it was meant to handle.

For example, if your mid-back has limited rotation, your neck may compensate by rotating more during everyday movements like checking your side mirror, looking over your shoulder, or scanning a room. Over time, those extra movements can add up to strain.



Breathing patterns matter too. When breathing becomes shallow and chest-dominant, the muscles around the neck may work harder to assist with breathing, especially when the lower ribs aren't contributing much.

This is one reason neck stretches don't always "stick." They may provide temporary relief, but if the mid-back and ribs are still not sharing the work, the neck can return to overworking because the underlying demand hasn't changed.

That doesn't mean neck-specific work is useless. Sometimes it's exactly what you need. But if you've tried neck stretches repeatedly without lasting change, try working one level down the chain first: a few minutes of mid-back rotation or rib-inclusive breathing, then notice how your neck feels afterward.

This week we looked at four seemingly separate topics — breath, posture, foot mechanics, and balance — and I want to name the thread that actually connects all of them, because I don't think it's obvious until you see it laid out together.

Breath moves through your whole ribcage when it's working well, not concentrated in one spot. When an area of the ribcage isn't participating, it's not damaged — it's just quiet from disuse, and can usually be reintroduced.

Posture isn't a shape you find and hold. It's a continuous coordination your body updates hundreds of times a minute, based on breath, balance, and what you're currently doing. Locking into a fixed "correct" position actually removes the adjusting capacity that makes posture functional.

Your feet influence movement much further up the chain than most people expect — how they're loaded changes how effort travels through your ankles, knees, hips, and spine. Distribution starts at your base of contact with the ground.

Balance is ongoing correction, not stillness. It relies on your nervous system integrating visual, inner-ear, and joint information continuously — which is why it can feel harder on stressful or tired days, independent of your actual physical capacity.

Here's the thread: in every one of these, your body is continuously distributing something — breath, effort, or attention — across the whole system, rather than managing it in one isolated part. That's Vyana Vayu, in practical terms: not a mystical energy, but a genuinely useful lens for understanding how your body actually works.

Balance can feel inconsistent from day to day in a way that doesn't track with strength or flexibility — and there's a real reason for that.

Standing balance relies on your nervous system integrating information from three main sources at once: your eyes (visual input), your inner ear (vestibular input, related to head position and movement), and your joints and muscles (proprioceptive input, related to pressure and position sense). Your brain is constantly cross-referencing all three to keep you upright.

When you're tired, stressed, or have been processing a lot of unfamiliar visual information (a new environment, a busy space, a screen-heavy day), that integration process doesn't run as smoothly — even though nothing about your actual muscular strength or joint flexibility has changed.

This is why a balance pose that usually feels stable can suddenly feel wobbly for no obvious reason. It's often not a reflection of your physical capacity that day. It's a reflection of your nervous system's current bandwidth for processing and integrating information quickly.

I find this reframe genuinely useful for students who get frustrated with themselves on an "off" balance day. The wobble isn't a failure of ability — it might just be useful information about how your day is actually going, separate from your practice entirely.

Standing still feels like a stable, unchanging state. It isn't. Your body is making continuous micro-corrections through your ankles, hips, and spine to keep you upright — hundreds of tiny adjustments a minute, happening faster than you can consciously track.

"Balance" isn't a position you find and hold. It's a constantly active correction process that happens to feel still because it's so fast and so automatic.

I bring this up because balance practices in yoga sometimes get treated like a test of stillness — can you hold this pose without moving. But a small amount of visible wobble usually means the system is working exactly as intended, actively correcting in real time. Stillness isn't really the goal. Responsiveness is.

Next time you're in a balanced pose, notice the small corrections instead of trying to eliminate them. What do you feel?

Here's something I wish more people had been taught about posture: it was never supposed to be a static shape you hold.

What we call "posture" is really an ongoing coordination — hundreds of small, automatic adjustments per minute, based on your breath, your balance, what you're currently looking at, and what task you're doing. Your body is constantly updating this in the background, without you consciously managing it.

This is why "sit up straight and hold it" often backfires as advice. Locking into one fixed position removes exactly the thing that makes posture functional in the first place: its ability to keep adjusting. A held position eventually becomes a static load on whichever muscles are maintaining it, which is a different (and often less comfortable) demand than the constant small adjustments your body is built to make.

This connects directly to what we've been exploring this month with Vyana Vayu — distribution and coordination happening continuously, not as a single held state. A more useful goal than "perfect posture" might be a body that's free enough to keep adjusting, rather than one holding a single ideal shape.

Something to notice today: when you catch yourself thinking "I need to sit up straighter," try shifting position slightly instead of locking into a fixed correction. Small, frequent adjustments tend to serve you better than one held position.

Here's a connection that surprises a lot of students the first time they feel it: how your feet are loaded can change how easily your spine rotates.
Try it yourself. Stand and shift your weight slightly toward the outer edges of your feet, then rotate your torso side to side. Reset, shift your weight slightly toward your inner arches, and try the same rotation again. Most people notice a real difference in how available the rotation feels between the two.
This isn't mystical — it's mechanical. Your feet are your primary point of contact with the ground, and the way they're loaded influences how force and effort travel upward through your ankles, knees, hips, and eventually your spine. Change the base, and you change what's available further up the chain.
This is Vyana Vayu in a very literal, physical sense: distribution starting at the periphery — your feet — and influencing something as seemingly unrelated as spinal rotation.
I'm not suggesting there's one universally correct way to stand or distribute weight through your feet. Plenty of positions are fine. What I want you to take from this is the connection itself — because I regularly work with students who've done a lot of direct spine or hip mobility work with limited results, and the missing piece turned out to be a few joints away, in how their feet were loading the ground.

Here's a two-minute experiment: your lower ribs are supposed to widen on every inhale, not just during a deep or dramatic breath — a regular, everyday breath. For a lot of people, that widening has quietly gone missing, not from any structural problem, but simply because nothing has asked those ribs to move in a long time.
The practice in this video is a simple way to reintroduce that motion. Wrap a strap, scarf, or your own hands around your lower ribcage. On an inhale, try to gently push outward against it, like you're trying to widen the strap. On the exhale, let it soften back in.
You're not forcing anything or trying to achieve some ideal breath pattern. You're giving the ribs a little resistance to organize around — which often makes an unfamiliar movement much easier to find than trying to "just breathe wider" with no feedback at all.
If it feels a little resistant or effortful the first few times, that's normal, and it's worth distinguishing from tightness. Tightness usually implies something is being held or restricted. This is closer to unfamiliarity — an area that's simply out of practice, not one that's damaged or stuck.
Try five slow breaths with the strap today, and then five without it, and notice if you can find a little more of that same movement on your own.

“Breathe into your belly” is a common cue, and for many people, it’s genuinely helpful. It can counter the habit of breathing shallowly into the upper chest. But it’s only part of the bigger picture.

Your ribcage is three-dimensional — more like a barrel or bucket handle than a piston. On a full inhale, the lower ribs widen side to side, expand front to back, lift slightly, and the belly softens forward. These movements are meant to happen together, not as separate things you have to consciously control.

This connects to what we’ve been exploring with **Vyana Vayu**. Distribution isn’t only about how effort moves through the body — it’s also about how breath moves through the whole torso instead of becoming concentrated in one area.

Over time, if your breath mostly moves through your belly or upper chest, other parts of the ribcage may become relatively still simply because they aren't being used. That can make something that is “unused” start to feel like it “can’t” move.

Try a simple check today: place one hand on your belly and one on your side ribs. Breathe normally for a few breaths — don’t change anything. Which hand moves more?

There’s no wrong answer. It’s simply information about your current breathing pattern — a starting point for noticing how breath connects with posture, stress, and areas of tension or restriction.

This week we've been exploring Vyana Vayu — the yoga concept for how your body distributes effort, breath, and attention across itself, rather than working in isolated parts.
Here's a simple three-minute practice to actually feel it, instead of just reading about it.
Stand or sit somewhere comfortable. Slowly reach one arm overhead. As you do, don't try to fix your form or make it look a certain way — just notice. What moved besides your arm? Did your ribs shift? Did your breath change timing? Did the opposite side of your body make a small adjustment to keep you balanced?
Lower the arm slowly and notice the way down. Is it as coordinated as the way up, or does it feel more abrupt, like your body stops paying attention once the "main event" is over?
Repeat on the other side and notice any differences between the two — most people find one side feels more fluid or more automatically coordinated than the other. That's not a problem to fix. It's just information.
This is the core of what I want you to take from this week: awareness before adjustment, always. You can't intentionally change a pattern you've never actually noticed. Before you reach for a new stretch, a new strengthening exercise, or a new mobility drill, spend a little time simply watching what your body is already doing. It usually tells you more than you'd expect.

This isn't about fixing anything in this moment. It's practice in noticing — which is really the starting point for everything else we've talked about this week. You can't redistribute effort you've never noticed accumulating somewhere.
