She didnโt just compete, she went beyond the finish line to create opportunities for others.
Masters Spotlight: Susan Hayden ๐ฆ
โI started swimming when my two daughters started swimming year-round at Crawfish Aquatics. I had a great first swim coach, Scott Rabalais, and eventually competed in Masters meets.
My husband decided to do the Louisiana Triathlon as way to get fit. I watched and cheered and realized the hardest part of the whole thing was the sport I was already doing (swimming), so I decided to give it a try.
As I entered the sport, I realized there wasnโt much support for adult women who wanted to get started in triathlon. So in 2007, I paired up with Warren McDonald and Pat Fellows to launch a womenโs only triathlon, and a kids triathlon, . I hosted free swim, bike, and triathlon clinics to help new athletes learn the sport.
I was inspired to do this because there was no real infrastructure in place for adult women as a gateway into the sport. I was extremely fortunate to be supported in my endeavors by a small army of volunteers in our community.
I worked as President of the Board of Rocketkidz Foundation (RKF) to secure its 501c3 status and today RKF still provides grants to area programs.
One of those early programs was the Outreach Swim Lessons at Crawfish Aquatics. [Coach] Nan and I chatted one day about the horrifying statistics regarding minorities and drowning, the lack of available swim lessons/pools and if there was a way to move the needle on that issue in our community.
RKF provided a grant, Nan found the families in need, and with the help of Crawfish instructors, many children have learned basic life-saving swim skills.
These days Iโm retired from most things, but I still train and do an occasional race now and again.โ
๐ With and Triathlons taking place this past weekend, weโre reminded that Susanโs impact continues to be felt by athletes of all ages throughout our community. Thank you Susan for helping create opportunities that are still changing lives today. ๐
