She took 25 years off from swimming…

Masters Spotlight: Mary Raven 🦞

Mary:
I grew up swimming but quit at age 16 when ballet became my priority. Over the years I tried different forms of exercise, but around 2018 a nagging hip injury led me back to the pool and to Crawfish Masters.

It’s been a joy to be part of the Crawfish family. With the support of my teammates and friends, especially Margaret, who will travel with me to swim, Rick, who has helped me with stroke technique, and Sherwin, Andrew, Wes and many others who push me every day in practice. I’ve continued to improve, even at the ripe old age of 47!

My newest challenge has been open water swimming. I completed my first open water race in Fort Myers last year and my second in Pensacola with a great group from our team. I ended up winning the 5K in my age group, which was pretty cool.

I’ve also been dealing with a painful shoulder, but with physical therapy, taping, needling, and moral support, I did well at the Greensboro Masters Nationals meet. Swimming with a team from Ohio, we finished 5th overall, and I did my best times in the 50 and 200 breaststroke, 100 IM, and 50 fly.

My son and daughter are my inspiration. Hank is in the Air Force training in the Special Forces to become a combat controller. That’s some seriously hard stuff and I credit his time at Crawfish for helping him push through the pain. Annie is kicking tail in school with plans to attend dental school, and has the same level of determination.

I’m really blessed to have them and all my friends, especially those here on this team. Thank you Nan for all that you do to keep us going!
