We should always be checking our pattern and flow before going in. This also allows our pump operators to set our pressure for us. Let’s not water the lawn when we do, wet the stuff down that may get hot when we open the door, covered porches in particular. It may just save you some trouble.

Doing some flowing during First Five last weekend. Once again, great work by everyone!

This weekend we got the opportunity to train with some great firefighters bringing our class, The First Five to Calhoun County. Awesome attitudes and hustle all day by everyone. Special thanks to Calhoun County Chief’s Association for making this possible. Be sure to tag your departments and thanks again everyone, tons of learning and we had a blast, complete with bald eagles. Marshall Township Fire Department

Out and about town: Dealing with aluminum doors with an Adams Rite lock, plan A should be through the lock. Buuuuuut, be prepared and don’t fall in love with the plan.

This is hands down my favorite post of all time. It made me realize these small Tips/Strategy & Tactics that some know and use, might seem like common sense to us. However, there was a time when they weren't, we learned them from any information we could grab, magazines, Senior FF’s and videos. A small tip can be a career/life changer. Think about Probie School, I bet you there is one small trick you learned from a badass instructor that helped you out at a job. Here is 𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐒 from IG original post - ☆ TFT Quick Tip ☆
Fire on the top floor and the s**ts is on! The chief sends you and your company to the top floor of the exposure building or adjoining apartment to search for fire extension. Almost always you will be without a charged hose line, and believe me it seems like a lifetime when you actually call for one. Before you start poking holes and ripping ceilings down - HEAR ME OUT - Take a moment and seek out a closet in the apartment. You constantly hear about controlling the apartment door, and of course this is a measure that needs to be taken SERIOUSLY on the macro firefighting level. So, let’s break it down on a micro firefighting level. Closet doors believe it or not (especially turn of the century buildings) are as substantial as the main apartment door. Even a cheap hollow core door “by law” will buy you 20 minutes of burn time.
That being said. The next time you your pulling ceilings in the adjoining without a charged line, take that extra moment and find a closet - open up the ceiling inside like a gentleman - see what’s going on above you. If the s**t is on, simply close the closet door, call for a line and begin your primary before it gets s**tty. Believe me... I love pulling ceilings at top floor fires, it is the true essence of Truckie firefighting.
However, this is an opportunity where you can truly shine as a senior firefighter and show your professionalism by identifying a closet door and acting accordingly.

Here you see an actual inward opening door with an (Angle Iron) covering the locking area. Watch the video I have addressing this very situation( it will be pinned to the top of my page for the next few days). The Angle Iron you see in the picture happens to be attached, in this case, to the door. Other times the Angle Iron will be attached to the jamb. We find this type of security measures especially in high crime areas. Our Multi-Force Door addresses these situations so that when they are encountered in the “Real World” you’ll be prepared for it. Check out the video and let me know what you think. Thanks

Part 2 from yesterday: if we are operating UNDER this roof, keep in mind what this parapet was designed to hide. HVAC units and other heavy stuff that wants to come down on us.

Let’s say you’re assigned to the roof of this building. Based on the location of the roof drains, what should you be anticipating when you prepare to make the roof? (Bonus points if you tell me the proper name of those roof drains)

Huge thank you to Deerfield Township Fire Department for having us up for a great night of FE. They put work in and stayed late with us for Irons 101. We had a blast!
