Golden Helmet award for Week 4 comes with a touch of history

JOHN LOPEZ, BAY CITY ACADEMY

It might be his first season of football, but Lopez is proving to be a quick study. The sophomore spirited Bay City Academy to a 72-63 win over Carsonville-Port Sanilac for the first victory in program history. Now he makes history again as the program’s first Golden Helmet winner. “He’s come a long way since this summer, just learning how to run the ball,” coach Rob McDaniel said. “He’s a tough runner. He doesn’t go down easily. He’s a solid player, someone we can depend upon and lean on.” Lopez rolled up 215 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries in the win, adding a pair of 2-point conversion runs. He also came up big on defense with eight tackles in the Big Thumb Conference Red triumph.

BAY CITY, MI -- Each week throughout the 2026 high school fall sports season, we spotlight athletes with our MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week project.

We recognize athletes for a job well done and give readers a chance to decide the weekly honor. Cast your vote as often as you’d like until the poll closes at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24.

JOSH THAYER, BAY CITY ACADEMY

The Bay City Academy football team captured its first win in program history, and Thayer was the big man in the middle of all the action. The 6-foot, 370-pound junior excels at center on offense and nose guard on defense. “I haven’t seen a play yet where he went backward,” coach Rob McDaniel said. “Every tackle he made, the team got more and more behind him, cheering him on.” Thayer notched 10 tackles in the 72-63 win over Carsonville-Port Sanilac and helped pave the way for 10 touchdowns on
offense.

BAY CITY, MI -- Checking in on the Bay City area high school football scene on a Monday afternoon, looking back on the action of Week 4 and peeking ahead to what’s to come in Week 5.

Friday Night Hero

RYAN OLSON, BAY CITY ACADEMY

Bay City Academy put itself in the history books, landing the program’s first victory with a 72-63 win over Carsonville-Port Sanilac, and Olson stood at the helm. The junior quarterback engineered the offense in eye-popping fashion as the Lumberjacks got in the end zone for 10 touchdowns.

“He’s not a flamboyant player, he just does everything the right way. When he sets his feet, he throws a beautiful ball,” coach Rob McDaniel said. “We put a couple plays in during the game for him to run, he got some good things out of it.”

Olson ran for three touchdowns, finishing with 49 yards on eight carries. He also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass and was instrumental in run-blocking. On defense, he registered seven tackles. Olson garnered 54.3 percent of the votes in the online poll.

Congratulations to our very own John Lopez as he is the first player in school history to eclipse the 200 yard mark in a single game.

Lopez finished with 215 yards and added three scores in the Lumberjacks 72-63 victory over Carsonville Port Sanilac Friday night.

BAY CITY ACADEMY 72, CPS 63

Of all the firsts Bay City Academy is achieving this season, this may have first on its wish list.

When the smoke cleared from a 72-63 shootout with Carsonville-Port Sanilac, the first-year Bay City Academy football team had its first victory.

“The kids were very excited getting the first win in school history,” coach Rob McDaniel said. “You could see the relief on their faces on the bus. It feels good to get the first one out of the way. Now we have to work hard to continue to improve every week.”

The Lumberjacks (1-3, 1-1) broke through in a big way, getting touchdowns from five different players while eclipsing the 70-point plateau. Ryan Olson rushed for three touchdowns and passed to Skyler Leisentritt for another to lead the way in the Big Thumb Conference Red triumph.

John Lopez and A.J. Tate each ran for two touchdowns and Brody Trudell added one in the win. Josh Thayer and Donte Briggs each registered 10 tackles to lead the defense.

Bay City Academy takes on Carsonville Port Sanilac tonight in Big Thumb Conference action! The Lumberjacks look for win #1 in their short athletic history while they look to damper the Tigers homecoming spirits!

A sneak peak at the upcoming BCA Dance Team that will make their debut on Friday at the Pep Rally and Homecoming Football Game!

They will be performing in addition to the BCA Poms team! The halftime show is going to be electric!

The Homecoming Game is 6pm on Friday September 25th and will be played at John Glenn HS! Admission is $5!
