💙 A happy-sad day at Blue Horse Farm! 💙

Yesterday we sent Belle and Bojangles Rebel, aka Cobra, off to their new homes up north.

Belle is one of our original horses and has been my own pet for nearly 10 years. Many of you who have followed her story know that she has developed heaves and hypohidrosis, and our hot, humid Southern climate has become increasingly difficult for her. Thankfully, family up north has agreed to give her a wonderful new home where we hope the cooler climate will help her thrive.

Belle will spend her retirement as a much-loved family horse—trail riding, being spoiled, and teaching the next generation of kids in our family. 💙 She is, after all, the reason for the “Blue” in Blue Horse Farm. She has carried, taught, challenged, and loved so many students over the years, and she will be deeply missed by all of us, as well as so many current and former BHF students.

Cobra came to us last year, and while he is a wonderful horse—smart, brave, outgoing, and incredibly capable—we learned that lesson-horse life just wasn’t his calling. He likes to move out, is sensitive to his rider, and would much rather be exploring a trail than walking circles in an arena with beginners!

Luckily, we had a family member who was the perfect match for him. Cobra will spend his days riding trails with his new best friend, getting to live the kind of life he enjoys most—out in the open and ready for the next adventure. 🐴🌲

One of the hardest parts of loving horses is recognizing when what is best for them means letting them go somewhere else. We will miss these two tremendously, but it makes my heart happy knowing they are both headed toward lives that suit them.

Happy trails, Belle & Cobra. You will always be part of the Blue Horse Farm family. 💙🐴

Went for a ride at Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve today. Yes, in late Aug. the bugs were not bad. It’s a really nice place but mostly caters camping and water activity’s for people
We had a nice time and stayed on the logging roads, but didn’t see any label horse trails.
It’s hard to know where horse trailers are supposed to park but it is apparently far down the road and you stay to the right at the fork near the playground.
But there are no signs to tell you this.
We try to be respectful and follow the rules, so my recommendation if you go is to ask check in agent where to go. Check Google Maps for the trails because there are no trail maps and AllTrails doesn’t have any horse trails listed.

We are working hard to make improvements to the barn! 💦Sprinklers are going in to cut down on the dust. It’s seems appropriate that we have had 5 days of rain, since we took on this project. 😆

‼️Warning! ‼️These are some serious wounds that did require veterinary care.
Last night’s horsemanship we discussed yellow level concepts of when to call the vet. Horses are accident prone horse 🐎 flight based creatures, but not all injuries require the skill of a vet.
The first one was a laceration from a large stick on a trail the horse stepped on a broke, sending it into the inner thigh. The second was a non-essential tendon cut from an unforeseen drop off in a lake. Thanks to one of my barn besties for the photos. ❤️

As a horse person, you should learn to treat some minor injuries and illness. Here are some examples of what you can treat yourself and when you should call your vet.
🤔Abrasions, minor eye irritations, small clean smooth edges lacerations are all some examples of things you can treat yourselves with clean water, antiseptic soap and healing ointment.
☎️Large jagged lacerations, puncture wounds, eye infections or injuries, colic, choking are all examples of reasons to call your vet.
Most vets are really busy people. So do yourself a favor and get to know them before it’s an emergency. Annual health exams, vaccines and dentals are a great way!
Also, have a book or two on hand to help you learn first aid and medical knowledge about your equine.

If you are interested in volunteering to assist with the show or as a judge. Please let me know.
⭐Judges do get some compensation but need to have experience in judging horse events.
