Later classes looked a little different last night.
Tornado warnings telling people to get to a basement blaring on everyone's phone were a little distracting. Couple that with the crazy storms last week that lead to power outages and trees being uprooted, some of the students understandably distracted.
So....to the basement we sent the students and parents.
It's self defense week so instead of the "traditional" self defense against being grabbed, we used class time in the basement to talk about other types of self defense.
This is the 10-14yr old age group which means a lot of these kids will start staying at home by themselves soon.
We covered things like:
- What is situational awareness?
- Do you have emergency phone numbers memorized besides 911? Address? Mom/dad full name?
- For extreme weather, do they know what the safest part of their house is?
- If they need to evacuate their home, does their family have an agreed upon meeting spot?
- Do they know where the nearest police or fire station is to their home?
Self defense comes in many forms, not just kicking or punching. Sometimes the best defense, is being prepared.
