Welcoming to Becket 🎉
Satpathy and members of the Bijayini Satpathy Dance Collective have been hard at work in Perles Family Studio for the this season's first Pillow Lab residency!
They are creating "Mukura" (The Mirror), a choreographic enquiry into the relationship between the body and the self it reveals. Centered around three characters from the Mahabharata, the dancers examine how identity and desire are shaped by the bodies through which they are expressed. Rooted in the vocabulary of Odissi—shaped by ancient performance traditions and the sinuous forms of temple sculptures—the work draws on the conventions through which gender is embodied and perceived.
In this movement laboratory at Jacob’s Pillow, these conventions are brought into focus. As the three characters navigate virtue, desire, shame, and resolve, imagined figures and alter egos emerge around them. Like a mirror, the ensemble reveals a tension between what is expressed and what is seen, as identity takes shape across different bodies.
