Want to get the most out of your feeding program this fall and winter AND ward off potential medical threats? While weight loss, dull coats and/or colic-like symptoms can be indicative of parasites, we can all agree that, whenever possible, parasite prevention is a better plan. As we transition into the cooler weather of autumn, it's an ideal time to have f***l egg counts (FEC) run on the horses in your barn. A f***l egg count tells you exactly which parasites and how large of an infestation your horse is carrying - which means you can deworm based on actual individual needs rather than guessing. FEC is an effective tool that helps you to target treatment and avoid overuse of deworming products. Stop feeding the parasites. Evict those pests and help your horse get the most out of your feeding program. For more details, check out the equine service tab on our website or stop in and talk to any of our team members.

As the heat of summer fades and fall comes on the scene, the grass in your pasture is also changing. The warm days and cooler nights cause the grass to accumulate higher levels of sugar. This can be especially problematic for metabolic or metabolic-prone horses and ponies. Management tweaks such as turnout schedules, muzzle wearing, and feed adjustments are as crucial to stay on top of in the fall as they are with incoming grass in the spring. If you have questions on helping your horse transition from summer to fall, contact one of our equine specialists.

Mare's milk typically peaks around 2 months of age. This means a foal relying on nursing alone after 8 weeks old may not be getting all the calories and nutrients that it needs for proper growth and development. Creep feeding -- giving a foal access to supplemental feed while blocking it from the mare -- is ideally introduced starting around 1 month of age. Do you have a creep feeder set up for your foal? Contact one of our Equine Team Members with any questions.

The hot, dry summer has been tough on hooves. Cracking, chipping, and brittleness are common this time of year - especially with the added wear-and-tear from fly-stomping. Mill Hoof Helper was designed to compete against products like Farrier's Formula Extra Strength; formulated with balanced zinc-to-copper ratios and higher biotin levels than most national brands. On sale this month, Mill Hoof Helper is one of the most cost-effective hoof supplements on the market. Give it a try in your barn!
