New flooring and new paint for us. They also renovated the restrooms, lobby, and former batting cage area. NOW the restrooms and main entrance are not quite finished. Please use the entrance to the left of the main entrance and there are temporary restrooms outside.

August 2 – Two Chess Tournaments for EVERYBODY!
We looked at the survey and came up with this…

Where: Edgewood Rec Center - 1980 Brookside Dr, Edgewood, MD 21040
Indoors as requested in the survey.

In the morning 4 Round Double Swiss Speed Chess
2 Sections – US Chess Rated and not-US Chess Rated. Each section will be capped at 18 players.
Format: 4 rounds of a double Swiss system. When paired, you play two games with your opponent, one with each color. This means a total of 8 games.
Time control: G/3+2 – US Chess speed chess rules apply
Prizes: TBD (still working on this bit). In the rated section, there will be class or “under” prizes.
Entry Fee: $5.00 (perhaps $7.00 for onsite registration)
Schedule: 9:00 am to 12:40 pm
Registration 9:00 – 9:45 Don’t be late!
Round 1: 10:00
All other rounds will start at as quickly as we can.

In the afternoon Quick Chess Quads
Again, in two groups, US Chess Rated and non-US Chess Rated. Each group is capped at 16 players.
Format. Quads (see below for details)
Time control: G/15+5: This time control only affects your Quick Chess rating in US Chess.
Prizes: TBD (still working on this bit). There will be a prize for each quad.
Entry Fee: $5.00 (perhaps $7.00 for onsite registration)
Schedule: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
Registration closes: 12:45 pm. Don’t be late!
Round 1: 1:00 pm
All other rounds will start at as quickly as we can.
Quad Chess Tournament Format:
1. Registration: After registration, players are sorted by rating, from highest to lowest. – For non-US Chess Players this will be by age.
2. Grouping: Players are then grouped into sets of four.
3. Round Robin: Each group of four players participates in a round-robin style tournament, where every player faces each other.
4. Adjustment for Non-Multiples of 4: If the total number of registrations is not a multiple of 4, a separate three-round Swiss tournament is organized for the bottom 5 to 7 players.
Disclaimers
Things may change a bit.
• When registration opens, you will receive an email. Those on this list will get advance notice before we post this on the US Chess site. When you get the email, you might want to act fast.
• We might slow down the Quick Chess Quads to G/20+5 but to do that we will have to convert the Speed Chess to double quads (i.e. 6 games not 8). If you have an opinion on this, let us know.
• We will be tight on time! When registration opens, register!!! AND BE ON TIME!!! We need to be out of the venue at 3:30.

Parks & Recreation Day: Where Community Grows will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026!

This year's Parks & Recreation Day will be held at Edgeley Grove Park (864 Smith Lane, Fallston) from 5-8 p.m., followed by a showing of Space Jam: A New Legacy from 7:45-9:30 p.m.

We will have food trucks, moon bounces, field games, obstacle courses, live demonstrations and more, so mark your calendars, you won't want to miss it!
