Today’s topic, Adjustments.
Most bowlers will leave a single pin and find a way to say that nothing was wrong. Reading how the ball goes through the pins tells you everything about where your shot is and what ball you’re throwing. Adjusting your speed can help with adjustments but it takes a lot of practice. Angular vs Parallel adjustments. Angular when you want to keep the ball away from the head pin such as 2-1 left, or 3-2 left. Parallel is usually on sport, when you want to keep the same shape, 1-1, or 2-2. Something I’ll try in more practice sessions is my hand position. Coach Parker had a theory that for 2-handers, your opposite hand acts as your thumb. Changing your hand position changes the rotation of the ball giving you a new ball in your bag. Bowling ball adjustments, shiner = more length, dull = earlier reaction.
First 2 Games
Not good games. Hitting pocket the first game and couldn’t make spares. Second game, missing my mark and couldn’t repeat a shot. Keeping my composure the whole set didn’t benefit me but it made me stand out on my pair.
Discussion
In discussion we talked about different ways people were playing the lanes. We talked about the over under on the right side that I was playing in. I moved to the gutter for my next approach.
Last 2 Games
I moved to the gutter and shot 298 and 245 for the last set… best 850 you’ll ever see.
What I Have Learned
I learned that knowing how to adjust to the lane is very important to keep pace. Today was also a reminder to try different approaches in practice. “Doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity”

Advanced Lane Play Week 3
Today’s topic, Mental Game.
The mental game is what separates the good bowlers from the elite bowlers. If anyone knows me, during my high school career, I wasn’t the most calm person. Going into this classroom session I can proudly say that my mental game had gotten so much better and it’s stronger than ever. We learned about the ways to handle ourselves and to better ourselves through techniques. Bowling on the pattern we are, it looks difficult from the low ratio, but playing it, it wasn’t too bad. I kept up with spares and minimized open frames. The two words that have helped me be a better bowler in the past year are “Be goldfish.”
First 2 Games
This pattern challenges speed heavily. Going with Mo’s Theory, my break point is around 3. Babying my Roto Grip Gem up the gutter gave it all the time it needed to come slam pocket. If I got fast, it skids, if I got left, it went high. I went 203, 236 for the first two games.
Discussion
Our discussion was more about ball speed and playing the correct part of the lane. I was in the right place and had the right speed that the shot demanded, keeping it slow and letting the ball go up the gutter and letting it rip into the pocket. The mental part, knowing what to do with the conditions brought to you. If something changes how are you going to react to it.
Last 2 Games
First game was solid shooting 229 with a 2-2 move left. Going onto the next pair for game four, something weird comes up. One lanes hooks and the other doesn’t. I opened in the second frame on the more blown up lane but one open doesn’t affect the rest of the game. I proceded to have trouble on that lane for the rest of the game. Although I did not open again, I wasn’t hitting pocket the right way. For the last frame I changed my approach. I moved a 1-1 left and slowed everything down, I struck out the tenth for 208. 876 for four games.
What I Have Learned
Being mentally strong is one of the biggest keys to overcoming a tough pattern and tough opponents. Handling adversity when things don’t go your way is very difficult. Being able to look at the challenge in front of you and attack it with confidence every shot is not for the weak. The last game when I couldn’t strike on one lane was tough. Looking at that lane going into the tenth I knew I had to strike twice to go plus. Calmly finding a different way to approach the lane and executing the shot, striking out the tenth frame. If you can’t find a way to stay in the game mentally to give yourself the best shot, then why are you there in the first place.

Today’s topic, Spares.
Nothing special to say this week about this topic. Spares are the make or break of any game. If you’re not striking you have to get count and make your spares. Which I did not do a good job to my standard on that today. We learned about the 3-6-9 rule for shooting spares but I don’t use that system. I use a system I learned from the ONU coaches and it hasn’t failed for me. We learned the movements for each pins on each side of the lane, this includes the left, middle, and right of each pin (1 board for each side of the pin). This did open my eyes to my approach towards my spares and I did change my stance to some of them today.
First 2 Games
Used my old dirty Roto Grip Gem that I hit with 500. With the pattern that we bowled on, you can’t get it outside of 11. I played 16-12 the whole time shooting 399 for 2. First game was a 211 with two splits, the next was a 188 with a single missed single pin spare. The gem was hitting hard but giving me stone in the back row.
Discussion
Coach Parker discussed my problem of my ball leaving me with stone breaks, my ball was reading just a hair early which meant I was playing too straight up. He suggested I move left, I did not.
Last 2 Games
I switched, I went to the concept after seeing someone else throw it. I went 191, 226. I move a touch left with my feet and eyes to give it the shape that it needed and it looked great. Spare shooting was better but I still missed a spare each of those games.
What I Have Learned
Spares are stupid but they’re a necessity for making a score flourish. The 191 game was the hardest 191 I’ve ever had because 7/10 frames were spares. Today has shown me some flaws, seems like I need to get to work.

ADVANCED LANE PLAY - Week 1
A league in my area that was created by arguably the best bowling coach in the region, to help people like me understand the game at a higher level.
Today’s topic, Reading The Lanes.
Everything you see on a lane graph is only an insight and not always true to what it says. Theres different types of lanes, oil machines, and environments. There’s different styles of bowlers both with you on the lanes and the lanes will change differently from lane to lane. Norm Duke said that he doesn’t look at the lane graphs when he bowls, he looks at the lane with his eyes, with his ball. Your eyes see more about the lane on the actual lane, not the graph. Trust your ball to feel it out.
With this short/medium(ish) pattern, you can’t swing it through the middle very well. I tried forcing it the first two game through the middle, shooting 185 and 158.
After going back to the classroom and having a discussion session with the 40 bowlers and the coach, I had some really good insights and switched my approach.
I switched to the Storm Concept and played 13-7. Which held very well across two pairs giving me 232 with the front 6, and a clean 219.
What I Have Learned
Reading the graph is one thing but reading the lanes is a different ball game. Knowing surface changes is also a big part, putting a little bit of surface on my concept allowed it to read the front and slowdown quicker when it got to the breakpoint. Big thing is, the miss room is nonexistent.

Giovanni and I went head to head on the 26 PBA Shark pattern
Scores were not high but very playable. One slight miss, one open frame can change the whole game.

Finally something happened and I bowled a 797 throwing the ball down the middle leaving a split second ball of the tenth. I got high qualifier with winning all high games. Got a bye into match play, couldn’t adjust to the lane I was on and lost to a 260.
