Drake Park is a cherished part of Bend's history. In 1910, Alexander M. Drake, founder of Bend, split the land that now makes up the Drake Park Neighborhood Historic District into residential lots.

Ten years later, the Women's Civic Improvement League, led by May Arnold, got 1,500 signatures and raised a $21,000 bond to help the city buy the riverfront property. The bond measure passed by a 2-to-1 margin, and in 1921, the 11-acre land along the river was sold to the City of Bend, and that is how it became known as Drake Park.

For the next few months, we are sharing park history and photos to help celebrate Bend Park and Recreation District’s golden anniversary.

Even further back, we recognize the past, current, and future significance of these lands to Indigenous Peoples. Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Paiute, and Klamath Nations have all called this home for many years.
