23-0 and 7-2 Tough start. More than tough - unmotivated.
In the midst of what was mostly collectively unacceptable today - there was this absolute gem of where teamwork, practice, ex*****on, and result all came together in one sacrifice bunt.

There’s some absolute dawgs banking it all. Years from now it will get cashed in. Life and sports are funny like that. Stack the work. Push through the rough days. Learn, grow, fail, fail more, fail more, fail more, get back up, to fail more…. Then one day you realize somehow all that time you thought you were falling down, you were actually climbing the mountain.

The Bombers baseball and travel softball programs are beginning to participate in tournament play. Our experience with travel baseball goes back to the 90s.
We were recently approached by a parent who was new to travel ball. So we decided to create some helpful content to show how we go about it in our organization.

A couple factors to consider for your situation:

1) Events requiring hotel travel will obviously be more expensive than those that don’t. It’s up to you to determine whether the event fits your level of play and/or development need versus maybe a want. Bottom line is that youth tournaments are for fun - exposure works both ways. No kid is signing a pro or college contract at a 12u event so relax, you’re not being left behind if you don’t jump on a plane or take that 7hr drive.

2) Are you part of an academy where the coaches are not parent coaches? If so, you should expect to cover their travel expenses. Their time should already be factored into their organization dues.

3) Tournament fees are posted publicly on the event websites. Be sure to check them out to know what is included in the fee you are paying. Does the fee include the cost of umpires? Know what you’re attending. Many parents are surprised by costs that are clearly articulated on the event websites.

4) If the per player breakdown comes to say $100 from a tournament costing $1300, but you are being charged $300 per player… that’s a total 13 player team cost of $3900. There’s nothing wrong with asking where/what the other $2600 is going towards. Don’t be afraid to ask! If it’s going back into the team, you should see it reflected in equipment, facilities, events, etc…

Enjoy this time in your kids sports journey and enjoy watching them play whether it’s local or travel. The most important aspects to youth sports is development and falling in love with the process of putting in work playing a game.
