🧁 You can bake a cake, leave out ingredients and still end up with a cake. But will that cake be as good as if you had included all the ingredients?

🧁 Sure you can cross the finish line by doing the same workouts day in and day out but there’s several good reasons not to.

🧁 If you want fitness growth you need to include all ingredients of a good training plan. How the plan is assembled will vary depending on goals and which type of race/distance you are trying to prepare for but the same principles apply. A typical running plan would include intervals, tempo runs, recovery runs, hills, strength and a long run. Maybe you’re into general fitness? A varied fitness plan of cardio, muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and balance combined with proper build and recovery phases will yield the best results for overall fitness.

🧁 Variety in workouts can also help prevent burnout and keep things interesting, as well as, prevent injuries.

🧁 A good coach will help you organize all these workouts into a productive training plan. Hit me up if you need help with a training plan! . . . Now I’m craving cake 🤔😬

Last night I attended Q&A with Scotti and Ernie Lechuga. For those unfamiliar they are elite cyclists and just completed Fat Pursuit a 200km winter fat biking race through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in which -20 degree temps are not uncommon.

Before they could even go they had to learn how to survive out there in the elements. They shared stories about lessons learned in camp and during the race. One of my big take always from last night was Scotti talking about the importance of taking care of what needed to be done in that moment and just really being in that moment.

Obviously being elite, they are used to racing all out but slowing down and taking care of all the little things so that small issues didn’t snowball and cause real trouble down the line was imperative in those conditions.

Our daily adventures aren’t quite as extreme as Scotti and Ernie’s but the same could be said for everyday life and training. There’s a process and if done correctly the outcome will be far better than if we try and rush through a training program or even daily tasks possibly skipping important details along the way.

So don’t worry about what’s at mile 90 when you’re only at mile 10. Take care of now and be in this moment so that when you do make it to mile 90 you’ll have a much better experience and success.

✅ So take the time to properly warm up before workouts

✅ Visit your PT as soon as something hurts

✅ Hydrate properly

✅ Get the appropriate amount of sleep

✅ Slow down and do all the little things right

💫 Want to change your life? Change the narrative.

💫 What happens when we start to say “I get to” . . . Instead of, “I have to”

💫 Apply it to running, apply it to work, apply it to life with kids/family.

💫 Give it a go for several weeks and see what happens . . . There’s a lot we can’t control especially right now in the middle of this pandemic but we CAN control the narrative.

💫 I get to 👊🏼🔥

Congrats to all who completed Athens Big Fork Trail Marathon yesterday🎉
•
The race is brutal enough as is. Less than ideal weather conditions made it all the more difficult. ABF is known for being among the toughest trail marathons in the US. 8 mountains ⛰ over and back with 7,400k feet of ascent according to the website (we’ll go with that bc my watch said a little less). Multiple creek crossings and technical terrain.
The rain was relentless and continued throughout (weather wasn’t supposed to come in until late afternoon). I was glad I started the race with the intention of using it as a training run. After about 9 miles my gloves were soaked and had a hard time using my hands to get things from my pack. I thanked myself for putting the essentials like gels in the easy to get to pockets. Faired pretty well through the turn around and felt strong on the climbs until about 8 to go. Started to lock up a bit (I had some cramping earlier in the week so not surprised) but I also imagine bc I couldn’t go fast enough on the long downhills to keep warm. The trail had become just a stream of water and chewed up at that point from the 17 milers and the faster runners before us. I had considered turning around earlier at the halfway. Definitely no shame in that. However, I still felt strong besides just being cold and uncomfortable. I definitely wasn’t going to see the results I wanted at the end of the day. It actually ended up being over an hour longer than I anticipated I could do BUT hopefully I’ll reap the rewards of that effort down the road. 👊🏼 It was still a great day and I enjoyed some laughs with @dianediebold so all in all it was a 🏅Huge 🙏 to Stacey Shaver (race director) and all the volunteers for taking care of us out there! My dad for waiting around all day then driving us 2.5 hrs 🏠. The biggest 📣 to @mhagelin11 for taking care of the kids while I was gone. No small feat! And @rebeka_payne for helping as well.
