Let’s hop on this trend.

As a mother to two boys, I’ve taught them over and over, “no means no,” “respect their body and space,” and in the past few years with one about to go off to college “drunk women can’t consent.” It’s never too early to teach boys these simple concepts. Please.

Perimenopause is THE hot topic in the fitness industry and it collided right at the time I figured out I was in the depths of it. And man, is there so much noise (and money) on this topic on social media!
As a menopause coaching specialist, here’s what I’ve learned:

🧑‍⚕️🩻 hormones affect SO MUCH in our bodies. The medical profession is just now finding out how much because they’re just now starting to really dig in and study women specifically after leaving women out of medical studies. From our hearts to our brains, hormones make a huge impact on our health. Did you know the highest su***de rates in women are women aged 45-64? I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

💃🏻🙋🏾‍♀️ not all women have the same experience in perimenopause. Some really fit women have a hard time with it. Some women never have a hot flash. Some women struggle for 10 years (!!!) in transition and some barely notice. Understanding that every woman will go through menopause at some point, but that each has their own unique experience, is critical for people in the health & wellness field when treating women.

💪🏋️‍♀️ I think we’ve all gotten the message that strength training for all women in general is critical. Whether you’re in your 20s-30s and building your foundation or 45-60 and focusing on quality of life, any woman can benefit from strength training. However, there’s lots of benefit to doing the movement that you love IN ADDITION. Yoga, Pilates, running, dance fitness - doing the things you love for the mental health & community benefits is so so important.

🍗🫘 We get it. Eat your chicken & beans with a side of cottage cheese & chia seeds. But also don’t forget to occasionally give yourself pleasure & joy in what you eat (& in other ways ;). The internet wants you to believe that the worst thing you can do as you age is get fat and I think the worst thing you can do is miss out on joy.

💊💉 HRT is an amazing tool but it can’t be a magical fix. Just like any medication, it needs to be used in conjunction with a strong foundation.

Starting to incorporate more of the workouts that I used to do now that my energy is finally starting to return! Thank you HRT!

I’ve been lifting heavy since March, after our last half marathon, adding in swimming, biking and running where I felt like it since it’s been so hot.

Today I tackled this circuit. I started simple and added complexity. The idea is to use as few weights as possible so you can move more quickly while challenging yourself. I used a 35, 15s and a 20 pound dumbbells.

1) goblet squat
2) plank row push up
3) single arm swing to reverse lunge press 🥵🌶️
4) deadlift to upright row
5) half Turkish get up

Full body plus my heart rate got up! I only did 3 rounds this time with 40 seconds work and 20 seconds rest. Give it a try!
