Dao & Daoism Pt.2 - Adam Wallace
Dao De Jing (The Scripture of The Way and Its Virtue) is the most influential and widely read book on Daoism, encapsulating the essence within just eighty-one short poetic chapters. Many uninitiated readers will miss this detail, but if they know Qigong, Taijiquan or other Chinese internal martial a...

Dao & Daoism Pt.1 - Adam Wallace
Dao, translated as The Way, refers to the Way of Nature. Laozi, the founder of philosophical Daoism, and author of Dao De Jing (Scripture of Change), reluctantly termed it “The Nameless” (as well as The Unknowable, The Void, and The Way) as he knew words limit, and Dao is limitless, beyond all d...

The Dread Plateau
Chinese martial arts and Qigong can boast millions of practitioners throughout the world, but a high percentage may never actually come to gain the greatest benefits because they succumb to “The Plateau”. Statistically, if you are reading this, you could even be one of them! Hopefully, by the end of reading this, you will have lowered those odds.
The Plateau is the level where the student feels he or she is no longer progressing any further and reaches a point of stasis, coming to experience a deep boredom or frustration, and even resentment. It begins to spell immediate disaster for a great many, as this is when interest, or whatever enthusiasm was present at the outset, is replaced with a lassitude that is hard to shake off.

Our Guide in Learning Qigong
Learning and developing a traditional Chinese martial art or Qigong system is really like climbing a mountain. In order to climb any great mountain, we first need to find the best, experienced guide.
The “Guide” is our Sifu, or teacher, further along the journey, shining the torch to illuminate our path out of the darkness. Having been where we find ourselves currently, he knows exactly what is needed in order to reach the next level, along every single step of the way. From his experience, he can point out all the obstacles and pitfalls to avoid, that will hold us back. It is said, “One word from a master can save you three years of practice”. (This is not about shortening the time, but rather to avoid prolonging the journey!)
I knew within minutes of meeting my Sifu from his lecture and demonstration, that I would be practicing Qigong for my entire life. It was what I had been looking for and hadn’t even known it.

The Importance of Finding the Right Teacher
While we can claim to be learning a particular style, it is nevertheless our teacher’s skill and his or her perception and interpretation of that skill which we are ultimately learning as much as the style itself. All the skill we learn from the teacher is a matter of our interpretation of that teacher’s interpretation and the interpretation of the teacher before him, and so on. Naturally, those more closely connected to the source of the skill have an advantage of the information coming through less “filters” and misinterpretations and is therefore clearer and more accurate. The further away we go from the source the more it becomes like an increasingly faded photocopy.

Here we have two branches of classical Chinese martial arts that are amongst the most widely practiced of all Chinese martial arts throughout the world. On outward appearances, it would seem these arts could not be more different from one another, because Wing Chun Kungfu follows the straight-line principle and Chen Taijiquan follows the circle. But the closer we look, and with more direct personal experience, we come to see there are as many similarities as there are differences.
