You May Have Noticed This Logo…

For some time now, you may have noticed the Tang Soo Do Training Initiative flag hanging at Pereira’s Academy of Karate. I’ve never really taken the time to explain what it represents or why I chose to be part of it.

The Training Initiative isn’t an organization, association, federation, kwan, franchise, or a new style of Tang Soo Do.

It’s something much simpler: martial artists choosing to train together, learn from one another, share knowledge, and support each other.

That philosophy is a big reason I became involved.

After nearly four decades in martial arts, I’ve learned that growth doesn’t come from putting walls around what you do. It comes from keeping an open mind, continuing to train, and surrounding yourself with people who are willing to share what they know.

Pereira’s Academy of Karate remains exactly what it has always been. Our identity, curriculum, standards, and commitment to our students haven’t changed.

What has changed is that I wanted our visual identity to better represent a relationship that has already been there.

That’s why you’ll begin seeing these two logos together more often:

Pereira’s Academy of Karate — our home.
Tang Soo Do Training Initiative — a community we train and grow with.

🥋 A new look. The same commitment.

Keep training. Keep learning. Keep growing.

🥋 SA BOM NIM SATURDAY #1

What My First Black Belt Taught Me

When I earned my first black belt, I thought I had reached the goal.

What I didn’t understand yet was that I had really just earned the opportunity to begin.

A black belt didn’t mean I knew everything. It meant I had developed enough of a foundation to start understanding how much there still was to learn.

Through the years, the belts changed. The ranks changed. I became an instructor, opened my own school, became a Master Instructor, and continued training in other martial arts.

But one lesson has never changed:

Never stop being a student.

The higher your rank gets, the more responsibility you have to keep learning, keep improving, and pass what you’ve learned on to the next generation.

That may be the greatest lesson my first black belt ever taught me.

🥋 Keep training. Keep learning. Keep growing.

🥋🔥 FRIDAY CHALLENGE! 🔥🥋

We’re kicking off our new Friday Challenge with a workout you can do at home, at the school, or just about anywhere you have some room.

🥊 THE 200-KICK WORKOUT CHALLENGE

Complete 5 rounds:

RIGHT LEG
• 5 Front Kicks
• 5 Side Kicks
• 5 Round Kicks
• 5 Inside-Out Wheel/Hook Kicks

💪 10 Push-Ups

LEFT LEG
• 5 Front Kicks
• 5 Side Kicks
• 5 Round Kicks
• 5 Inside-Out Wheel/Hook Kicks

🦵 10 Squats

⏱️ Rest 30 seconds — then go again!

Complete all 5 rounds and you’ve done:

🥋 200 Kicks
💪 50 Push-Ups
🦵 50 Squats

But here’s the rule: THIS IS NOT A RACE.

Good chamber. Good balance. Proper technique. Re-chamber every kick and stay under control.

If your technique starts falling apart, slow down or take a break. I’d rather see 200 good kicks than 200 fast, sloppy ones.

Little Dragons and younger students can cut the push-ups and squats down to 5 each per round.

🔥 Think you can finish all 5 rounds?

Give it a shot this Friday and let me know how you did!

🥋 THROWBACK THURSDAY — AUGUST 2017

This one takes me back to August 2017, when I was promoted to the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Combatives Belt.

At the time, the Combatives Belt served as a probationary rank between White Belt and Blue Belt, recognizing proficiency in the core self-defense techniques of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu curriculum while continuing the journey toward Blue Belt.

I had already been involved in martial arts for 30 years at this point, but this picture is a reminder of something I still believe today: no matter how long you’ve trained or what rank you hold, you should never stop being a student.

Almost a decade later, I’m still on the mats, still learning, and still working to improve.

Different belt. Different chapter. Same journey.

🥋 WEDNESDAY WISDOM

Your belt shows your rank.
Your behavior shows your character.

In martial arts, it’s easy to focus on the next belt, the next test, or the next promotion. But the color around your waist only tells people where you are in the curriculum. It doesn’t tell them what kind of martial artist—or person—you are.

Character shows in how you treat a brand-new student.

It shows in how you react when you lose.

It shows in whether you help someone who is struggling, how you respond to correction, and what you do when nobody is watching.

As you move up in rank, you should become more skilled—but you should also become more humble, respectful, patient, and willing to help others.

Anyone can wear a belt.

The goal is to become the kind of person worthy of wearing it.

TECHNIQUE TUESDAY

This week we’re breaking down the Rear Leg Side Kick — one of my favorite kicks for developing power, balance, and proper hip rotation.

It’s not just about kicking hard. The key is learning to turn the body, get a strong chamber, drive through the target, and stay controlled from start to finish.

Check out the video for the full breakdown!

👊 Want to learn techniques like this for yourself? Come train with us at Pereira Karate! Whether you’re brand new to martial arts or looking to get back into training, we have classes for kids, teens, and adults.

Your first step is walking through the door. Come try a class and see what Pereira Karate is all about!

🥋 MOTIVATION MONDAY

Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 10.

One of the easiest things to do in martial arts is look around the room and compare yourself to someone else.

Maybe their kicks are higher.
Maybe their form looks sharper.
Maybe they learn faster.
Maybe they’re already wearing the belt you’re working toward.

But what you don’t see are the hundreds of classes, mistakes, corrections, frustrating days, and hours of practice that came before that.

Everyone in the dojo is on a different page of their own story.

The student you’re looking up to today was once a beginner too.

So instead of asking, “Why am I not as good as them?” ask yourself:

“Am I better than I was yesterday?”

That’s the comparison that matters.

Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep putting in the work.

Your Chapter 10 will come.

WHAT WE DO vs. WHO WE BECOME

When we first begin martial arts, most of our attention is on what we do.

We learn how to punch, kick, block, move, grapple, defend ourselves, and perform our forms. We practice technique over and over, developing coordination, strength, timing, discipline, and skill.

But after enough years of training, you begin to realize that the techniques were only part of the lesson.

The deeper lesson is who we become because of the training.

Patience when something doesn’t come easily.
Discipline when we don’t feel like practicing.
Humility when we realize there is always more to learn.
Self-control when we have the ability to act but choose restraint.
Compassion toward others.
Awareness of ourselves and the people around us.
Perspective when things don’t go our way.

A student may come through our doors wanting to learn how to fight or defend themselves. My responsibility as an instructor is to teach them those skills.

But my greater responsibility is to help them become someone who understands when—and why—not to use them.

Belts eventually fade. Trophies collect dust. Even the physical abilities we spend years developing will change with age.

But the character built through years of training can stay with us for the rest of our lives.

The first lesson teaches us what to do.
The deeper lesson teaches us who we become.
