Bethesda Big Train Baseball The Bethesda Big Train is a collegiate summer baseball team located in Bethesda, Maryland.

John Ourisman and Bruce Adams founded the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club (BCBBC) in 1998 with a mission to improve the quality of youth baseball and softball fields in our area. In our first project, we built a $2 million jewel of a ballpark at Cabin John Regional Park and named it after the legendary Washington Post sportswriter Shirley Povich. Povich Field is now the permanent home of the Bethesda Big Train as well as playing host to Georgetown University’s baseball team and hundreds of youth and adult ballgames each year. Since completing Povich Field, BCBBC has helped make more than $500,000 worth of improvements to youth baseball and softball fields, including Cabin John #2, the youth version of Povich Field, and Jackie Robinson Field in Anacostia, home of the Fields of Dreams after-school program. Since the Big Train commenced play in 1999 as a part of the Clark Griffith League (CGL) success on the field has been a staple of Big Train baseball. After winning the CGL Championship in 2004, the Big Train joined the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League (CRCBL) and have been a member since. That first year, 2005, we won the league championship and shared the post-season tournament championship with the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts and, in 2006, were able to repeat as regular season champions. In 2009, the Big Train won both the regular and postseason championships and in 2010, after finishing 3rd in the regular season, went on to capture their 2nd consecutive CRCBL Championship. All of this success has led to national recognition, with the Big Train being ranked as the 9th best summer collegiate baseball team in America in 2009 and 27th best in 2010.

Our annual Big Train Base Ball & Holiday Auction is an important opportunity to bring the Big Train Family together in the offseason, to celebrate our successes on and off the field, and ensure a strong financial foundation to support the team and our community service initiatives.

This year’s Big Train Base Ball & Holiday Auction will be held on Sunday December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Again this year, the event will be held at the wonderful KID Museum located directly above the Bethesda METRO with a fabulous dinner from the Bean Bag Deli and ice cream from Max’s Best Ice Cream. We will showcase items from our online auction and present our 2026 Randy Schools Big Train Outstanding Service Awards.

We are excited to announce that December 6 will be a Big Train-Hacopian Family Reunion. Chris and Eddie Hacopian will join ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian as our special guest speakers. The Hacopian Family was one of the First Families of Big Train Baseball. Chris and Eddie’s dad Derek Hacopian was the Big Train’s Head Coach from 1999 to 2004, leading the Big Train to our first ever league championship in 2004. Derek’s mom Elda Hacopian was Big Train’s General Manager while sister Aida Hacopian was the Big Train’s first Super Fan. Chris and Eddie played for the Big Train in 2023. Following his dad Derek as a college All American, Chris was the #1 pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2026 MLB draft. Eddie was the Ripken League’s Most Outstanding Player in 2022 playing for the Alexandria Aces. This year, Eddie played for the Capitales de Québec in the independent professional Frontier League. Two time MLB All Star and former Washington National Gio González visited Povich Field September 30 and donated signed balls for the Big Train’s annual online auctions to raise funds for our community service initiatives. Gio, a long-time Big Train supporter, also donated two signed cards for the auctions that will be held online November 17-24 and December 1-8.

Walter Johnson’s Washington

Big Train baseball hosted Walter Johnson’s grandson and biographer Hank Thomas and members of the local chapters of SABR — Society for American Baseball Research — at our Saturday July 11 game. All fans received a copy of Walter Johnson’s Washington, a fold out map of 30 sites in the greater Washington region connected to Bethesda’s Big Train. The brochure was created by Meghan Bennett of MB Creative LLC and produced with the support of The Kiplinger Family Foundation.

Authors Bill Hickman and Bruce Adams made a presentation based on the brochure to Peerless Rockville members at the Rockville Senior Center on Monday morning September 28. Our indispensable guide for this project was the terrific biography written by Walter’s grandson Hank Thomas — Walter Johnson: Baseball’s Big Train (Phenom Press, 1995). It is a must read for any serious fan of baseball history. And it is available for sale at the Big Train Team Store.

Walter Johnson’s Washington begins with the 19 year old Walter arriving in Washington on July 26, 1907 and continues through his death in December of 1946, funeral, and burial in Rockville Cemetery. The brochure and map list the monuments and sculptures created to honor baseball’s greatest pitcher including the magnificent Shirley & Walter sculpture created by Toby Mendez and unveiled at Povich Field on November 6, 2021. Highlights include the 1924 World Series championship celebration, visits to the White House, the family home on Old Georgetown Road and farm in Germantown, tossing a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River, Walter’s service as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, as well as a 1932 testimonial dinner held at the Shoreham Hotel.

HOLD THESE DATES!

Our annual Big Train Base Ball and Holiday Auction is an important opportunity to bring the Big Train Family together in the offseason, to celebrate our successes on and off the field, and ensure a strong financial foundation to support the team and our community service initiatives.

Today we are announcing our online auction dates and the date of this year’s Base Ball & Holiday Auction. Put Sunday December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. on your calendar to join us in celebrating Big Train. Again this year, the event will be held at the fabulous KID Museum located directly above the Bethesda METRO. Another fabulous dinner from the Bean Bag Deli with ice cream from Max’s Best Ice Cream. We will showcase items from our online auction and present our 2026 Randy Schools Big Train Outstanding Service Awards.

We will have two online auctions this Fall to help you do your holiday shopping. The first will open on Tuesday, November 17 at 5 p.m. and close Tuesday, November 24, at 10 p.m. The second will open Tuesday, December 1 at 5 p.m. and close on Tuesday, December 8 at 10 p.m. Many of the items in the second auction will be on display at the December 6 event. Please add these dates and times to your calendar as well so you don’t miss out on the perfect holiday gifts for your loved ones.

To avoid getting you too excited all at one time, we are going to hold off announcing our special guests for December 6 until next week. The news is just too fun. Walk Off Parkinson’s takes over Povich Field on October 4th!

Bethesda Big Train is proud to support the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area (PFNCA)’s when they host their annual Walk Off Parkinson’s event Sunday October 4, 2026 at Shirley Povich Field.  The event includes a community walk, physician presentations, resources about Parkinson’s Disease, games and more.  Free food is served including ballpark favorites — hot dogs, popcorn and ice cream!  The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

There is no cost to attend and donations for PFNCA are accepted.  To register to attend, please visit https://parkinsonfoundation.org/walk-off-parkinsons.
