It’s Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day, so we asked Director of Golf Course & Grounds Jim Roney a few questions about what it takes to care for Saucon Valley.

Jim shares what members might not realize goes into maintaining the courses each day, what it means to care for Saucon Valley and what makes him most proud of his team.

A special thank you to Jim and the entire Golf Course & Grounds team for all they do.

The new Grille Room menu has arrived, bringing fresh flavors and seasonal ingredients to the table!

Tuna Tomato Tonnato pairs tomato water, fried capers and mustard greens for a fresh start to the new menu.

Crispy Chicken Milanese meets trofie pasta, frisée, herbs, pistachio pesto, arugula and lemon in this new addition to the Grille Room menu.

Crisp, creamy and bright. Roasted Eggplant Lavash is finished with ricotta salata, pickled peppers, mint, parsley and scallions.

A taste of late summer. Diver Scallops are paired with corn, Upstate Abundance potato, corn fritters, Nueske’s bacon lardons and poblano.

Save room for this one. Bourbon Chocolate Bar layers moist dark chocolate cake with bourbon vanilla crème, pecan praline, brown butter pecan ice cream, bourbon caramel sauce and smoked sea salt.

Roasted Eggplant Lavash is finished with ricotta salata, pickled peppers, mint, parsley and scallions.

A new reason to order pasta. Maine Lobster Cavatelli features green peppercorn, lobster butter, preserved lemon, Gruyère and breadcrumbs.

The Dry-Aged Duck Breast brings together farro, baby carrots, toasted almonds, peach gastrique and duck jus for a seasonal addition to the new menu.

Investing in the future of golf at Saucon Valley!

Saucon Valley Country Club is pleased to share plans for the next significant investment in the Club’s golf experience: a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center and the transformation of the current six-hole Short Course into a new nine-hole course designed by acclaimed golf course architect Andrew Green.

The Golf Performance Center will create a premier year-round destination for instruction, practice, club fitting and player development, featuring five hitting bays, golf simulators, advanced putting technology and indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.

Just steps away, the new Andrew Green-designed nine-hole Short Course will expand opportunities for junior and family golf, instruction, leagues, member events and casual play while offering greater variety and strategy for players of every skill level.

Together with enhanced practice facilities, these projects will create a comprehensive golf environment designed for how members learn, practice, play and enjoy the game throughout the year.

A familiar part of the Saucon Valley landscape holds a unique connection to the Club’s history.

The arched bridges found throughout the property are supported by custom-made wide-flange steel beams produced at Bethlehem Steel’s 48-inch mill. Each beam was cut to a precise length and passed through massive rollers to create the exact arch needed for each bridge before being brought to Saucon and installed by Bethlehem Steel workers.

Today, Saucon Valley Country Club has more center I-beam construction steel bridges than any golf course in the world, a distinctive piece of engineering and a lasting connection to Bethlehem Steel, whose leaders helped establish the Club more than a century ago.

Saucon Valley Country Club provides an important habitat for native species like the Eastern Bluebird. Across the property, 20 bluebird boxes provide nesting sites for these colorful residents, supporting two to four nesting cycles each year with two to six chicks in each cycle.

From bright blue eggs to newly hatched chicks and fledglings, the Saucon Sanctuary Foundation helps monitor and support the bluebird population throughout the nesting season. Once declining by nearly 90% due to habitat loss, Eastern Bluebird populations are steadily recovering thanks to conservation efforts that provide the habitat and nesting sites they need to thrive.

On any given morning, the Saucon Valley Grounds Team is already at work, caring for the courses, gardens and grounds across our 850-acre property.

Following the recent U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the Archives Committee started looking back at the generations of grounds staff who have helped keep Saucon in first-rate condition. These photos from the 1950s offer a glimpse at that work decades ago. While the equipment has certainly changed, the dedication to caring for Saucon has not.

Pictured are Golf Course Superintendent Leonard Strong, who served Saucon from 1940 to 1958, and members of his team. Leonard was the brother of Old Course architect Herbert Strong and oversaw the completion of both nines of the Grace Course as well as the Short Course, adding another chapter to the Strong family’s important place in Saucon’s golf history.
