As Pilates instructors, we should know the simplest actions and muscle groups—but many of us feel the movement without knowing the words. If anatomy intimidates you, the only way forward is practice. I will share how to approach anatomy that actually make sense and applicable. This mini workshop is unique to THE BODYLINE LENS coming in July 18-19 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. You should see what I’m seeing right away. Which version do you teach and why? Or can you teach both versions? Let’s see what you come up with. Brand new Train Your Eye material coming in at THE BODYLINE METHOD LENS - July 18-19 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. It’s more than “fixing” and forcing clients into optimal form. It’s how to use your eyes and cues to get clients into the movement that works best for them. If you like this type of learning, you’ll want to join. This is in studio, 2 day course, a total of 12hrs. CEC’s available.

Common sense is one of the most underrated teaching skills in Pilates.
When I see an advanced exercise, I’m not thinking about whether it looks impressive. I’m thinking about who should not be doing it.
I wouldn’t teach this to a new client. I wouldn’t teach it to most clients over 60. I wouldn’t teach it to someone with balance issues, someone who can’t balance on the balls of their feet for 30 seconds, or someone dealing with a bunion.
Does that mean the exercise is off the table? Not at all.
The real skill is understanding how to regress it, modify it, and extract the benefits without taking unnecessary risks.
Knowing exercises is one thing. Knowing when, why, and for whom to teach them is what separates instructors from technicians.
This is a major focus of my immersive weekends: learning how to train your eye, assess risk, protect and prevent yourself (from liability) your clients (from in juries) , and make smart programming decisions.

In both The Bodyline Lens and The Bodyline Method, we’ll explore:
• Train Your Eye®
• Theme & Variations
• Filling in the Gaps
• Teaching drills
• The craft of cueing
• Signature workouts
The Bodyline Lens also takes a deeper dive into anatomy and class design—how to build sessions that honor tradition while still feeling fresh and relevant.

In a world that is always chasing the next new thing, I think rituals matter. I treat my Pilates practice this way. The movements may be familiar, but the experience is not. The breath becomes fuller, the body goes deeper, and my mind has time to settle.
Mastering movement takes repetition and exploration. It takes patience. The real magic is often hidden in the exercises you already know.
So stop chasing new exercises for a moment and take a deeper dive instead. You might discover something new about the practice or yourself. Share with someone who needs to hear this.

Make Pro Class part of your weekly routine. It’s the only class we record and send out. And I’m in a period where I must create new material. Then I get to teach it to you. Sometimes it’s a complete fail and we laugh or it goes perfect. Either way, your feedback is important in this creative process. I think many of who have been joining can feel that too.

One of my biggest passions is education. Understanding where Pilates comes from—and how it continues to evolve for the bodies in front of us—is everything. Every teacher trainer brings a different background, a different relationship to movement… and yet, they all chose Pilates. So I keep coming back to this question: Why did you choose Pilates over everything else?
Thank you to all the teacher trainers from last weekend. Many of them completed their training weekends and now it’s time to get their hours. The next round begins at the end of the month with Movement Principles—June 26-28. Let’s keep learning, questioning, and growing.

There are a lot of reasons I teach footwork.
First, I simply love the ritual of it. It’s the beginning of class where I can settle in, connect to my breath, and let my nervous system receive feedback from the carriage. The movements aren’t overly complex, which gives the mind a chance to quiet down while the body starts to wake up.
It’s also a fantastic warm-up. The legs are moving in a supported environment, blood starts flowing, breath patterns become easier, and the body prepares for what’s ahead.
And yes, there’s tradition. Joe Pilates began his workouts with footwork, and I’m old-fashioned enough to believe some traditions are worth carrying forward.
That said, my footwork moves quickly. I don’t teach every position, and I don’t believe honoring tradition means refusing to evolve. My teaching has always been about respecting the past while looking toward the future.
Lately, not teaching footwork at all has become another trend in Los Angeles. If you saw yesterday’s post, you know I have thoughts about trends.
Thankfully, we haven’t yet seen many Pilates studios with no teachers at all…
That’s right. Kiosk-style, pay-to-play workouts.
More on that later.

Rhythm and flow matter. But so does building a stronger, more capable body.
A well-rounded Pilates class isn’t built on endless repetition of the same thing. It requires thoughtful programming, strategic overload, spring changes, equipment changes, and an understanding of why each exercise exists in the first place.
If you’re feeling confused by the endless stream of Pilates advice on social media, you’re not alone.
That’s exactly why I created my two immersive workshops. These experiences are designed to help teachers meet the demands of today’s Pilates industry while staying grounded in Joseph Pilates’ original principles.
We’ll explore:
• Train Your Eye®
• Theme & Variations
• Teaching Drills
• Programming & Critical Thinking
• New exercises that help fill in the gaps
• Workouts, feedback, and practical application
