After 2.5-3 years of trying everything (private lessons, group lessons, working with him regularly on our own, constant exposure, more lessons, and more group classes), the nugget is a swimmer!!!

In 2025, we did ISR (I avoided it for awhile because we didn’t need it with our other kiddos and it came with a nice price tag) which was a game changer. It got us over so many hurdles and even got him in the pool with his prosthetics so he could safely get to a back float with his leggies on (something our family felt he needed to learn).

We knew he was going to be around water with prosthetics his whole life so he needs to be able to be safe should he ever fall in.

Thanks to ISR and continued lessons and lots of exposure and practice, Louie is finally swimming.

We are so proud.
Knowing how to swim is a safety thing not a luxury. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children and it’s always been a huge priority for our family.
Being a bilateral above knee amputee comes with its challenges and it took a long time for Louie to figure out how to move his body in the water effectively. I wouldn’t trade all the time and money spent to know he can be safe and also have a blast wherever we are swimming. He has always loved the water, but now he can be independent.

I’m proud of ALL my swim kiddos.

But this guy.
He makes my heart sing.

Louie you are amazing!🐠❤️

Thanks for teaching me and so many of our other friends on the pool deck that SWIMMING IS FOR EVERYONE!

Prosthetics don’t float. They sink. They’re heavy and don’t flex or catch the water at all. It’s like floating or swimming with weights strapped to your thighs and no knees to bend.

ISR protocol is to practice all of the lifesaving skills in what a child wears every day. Louie’s mom didn’t hesitate to immediately say - it’s ok. Put the prosthetics on and get back in the pool.

Every kid is different. Every kid is capable of being safe. ISR works.
And a huge thanks to CAST Water Safety Foundation for their support!

Working hard to get the Robinson backyard ready for hundreds of tiny play dates!

Hosting our swim lesson friends has become one of the sweetest things about summer for all of us. ❤️☀️

We haven’t moved lessons outside yet, but here’s what we are working on:

The pool deck is getting a little touchup. 🖌️🔨
There are so many more strawberry plants going in! 🍓
A zinnia patch that will grow more blooms the more kids pick. 🌸
A tiny urban veggie garden to help water and explore. 🥕

We are so excited to bring lessons home soon!

This old pool was begging to see the sun today. ☀️

I have to say my recycled billboard turned pool cover worked infinitely better than the actual pool tarps I’ve used in the past. (It’s so heavy though!)

We are lucky to be able to lock the sunroom doors and close off this part of our yard completely in the winter. But wow do we miss it!

I have to lower the water to below the plumbing so it doesn’t freeze in the super cold months. Most of the water stays. Now we slowly fill it back up so we can hopefully get the pump on tonight.

I know we have a few more cold weeks ahead, but I’m ready to look toward the warmer months.

🐧Lola’s penguin imitation never gets old! ❤️

This is what I mean when I tell a child to put their face in BEFORE they push off.

Face in first before the push means they’re in a controlled streamline, head down, eyes on a low hand target, body horizontal in the water from the start. Her feet are at the surface to kick and not sinking, and arms are ready to pull.

On spring break this week with your ISR kiddo? Practice some penguin starts! Good body position in the water makes swimming come naturally.

🐠M learned to float last winter as an infant, and just finished a second 6 week session to solidly learn the swim float swim sequence.
🐠Like most *almost* two year olds he started the session with BIG FEELINGS.
🐠Consistency pays off! No more tears, just fun being safe and strong, finding new ways to confidently move through the water.

Stay warm (and safely away from closed swimming pool covers) today! ❄️☃️

If you’re filling your tub ahead of this snow/ice storm PLEASE put a child safety lock on the door.

Drowning doesn’t only happen in swimming pools.
