OPEN THE TRAIL TO INDEPENDENCE & BLUE LAKE!

Join the Sweet Grass County Recreation Association for a volunteer trail work weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13.

Meet at the Fourmile Trailhead between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Fourmile is approximately 43 miles south of Big Timber via Highway 298 and Main Boulder River Road. From there, we’ll travel about 7 miles to the work site, located roughly 2 miles upstream of Box Canyon.

Bring high-visibility apparel, gloves, a shovel, pry bar, food and drinks, and bug spray. SGCRA will provide a water and snack station, along with first-aid supplies and fire extinguishers.

Volunteers will help scatter limbs and fallen timber back into the forest and roll rocks to clear the trail corridor. SGCRA volunteers will operate all motorized equipment at the work site.

Make a weekend of it! Camp with SGCRA members at Fourmile or stay at one of the nearby campgrounds.

And on Saturday night, stick around for a Bobcat football watch party at Fourmile!

Come lend a hand and help reopen access to Independence and Blue Lake.

Comments opened today and there are already 224 thousand comments. Comments close September 21.

Public comments

Shout out to ONXMAPs. They have created a page that consolidates all the open comment periods across the federal agencies. Even add links to the comment areas.

It’s hard to keep up with Federal agency plans. They also have a habit of planning something for a long period of time then giving the public short 30 day comment periods. No one wants to read through the Federal Register which is often 100s of pages every day to find that there is an open comment period regarding area in your back yard that you use every month.

Even if you subscribe to NFS or BLM subscriptions, you can miss notices on management plans or motor vehicle use plan changes.

ONX Maps now has a page showing all the open comment periods. Suggest everyone check it out once a month.

Explore open public land comment periods from the BLM, USFS, NPS, and USFWS on an interactive map. Find proposals, review details, and submit feedback.

Magic City 4x4 has joined Tread Lightly! as a club in 2026. Tread Lightly! Is an organization that helps keep America’s outdoor off-road recreation areas beautiful, healthy and accessible. They offer tools for groups and individuals to tread lightly, reduce your impact and protect the places we love to explore for generations to come. We are currently working with Tread Lightly! and the Custer Gallatin National Forest to update signing for Benbow Jeep Trail that our club helps maintain.

Highly encourage anyone who enjoys our public lands to join Tread Lightly! as an individual or group to support the effort of keeping access open and spreading the word to keep the lands clean.
