Recognizing and Responding to Acquaintance Threats 11/26/2025

Check out our newest blog post:

Recognizing and Responding to Acquaintance Threats Emily met him through church. He was friendly, always around to help, and never crossed a line—until he did. One night, after walking her to her car, he leaned in too close. She laughed nervously...

There is a reason I try not to take a hard stance from the short video clips.

We can often make assumptions and evaluate technical skill, but without hearing what was said or knowing the available facts, it can be hard to judge legality.

If you only say the first part of the video, you could make the argument that the guy in the blue shirt has a righteous self-defense claim.

When you see another angle it makes him appear to be the initial aggressor. As it stands he was found guilty and on appeal, the ruling was upheld the self-defense claim was not met.

So on the technical aside, don't float the gun. The blue shirt flags his own hand several times in the video.

On the legal side, if you are the initial aggressor you are going to have a very hard time claiming Self-defense.

Notwithstanding the myriad of “self-defense” issues and problems with this entire situation, this is why we really try not to play the ground game. Sure, it’s important to know what to do there, but the intent MUST be to get up quickly. And when you are on the ground, you have to control the limbs and their ability to reach for weapons. A lot of classes out there that teach ground defense don’t talk about hidden weapons or controlling the limbs. It’s a basic assumption in Krav Maga that this can and likely will happen. Train well, people - wherever you train.

We get this a lot with people interested in Krav Maga, that they think they have to do something, or be in some kind of shape before starting. And quite honestly, it doesn’t happen. Just show up. Make it a priority in your life, schedule it and show up to class. You will get better. I can promise you that.
