States second place champions

Game one was loss with a two hour rain delay. But the boys came back fighting losing 6-9. The second game against Binghamton post 1645 was a nail biter until the very end- with the boys giving it all- winning 7-5. Moving them onto semi finals. Good luck today boys.

Adrian Barnes struck out a batter with the bases loaded as the Junior Mariners recorded a 7-5 win over Binghamton Post 1645 in the New York State Junior Legion State Tournament Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Mariners suffered a 9-6 loss to the Junior Utica Blue Sox.

The Jr. Mariners have to defeat the Blue Sox twice Satursay to advance to the Northeast Regional in Bangor, Maine.

Against Binghamton, the Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-clearing double from Kal Abernethy. Barnes led off the game with a double and after Jake Perkins walked, Jake Kaska singled to load the bases. Abernethy followed with the big blast.

Binghamton battled back to tie the game in the third inning, but the Mariners rallied for four runs in the fifth.

Barnes and Perkins walked to start the inning and advanced on a ground out. Abernethy singled to score Barnes with the go-ahead run. Then, Elliotte Curry’s ground ball
was misplayed allowing Perkins to score. After Curry stole second, Gabe Moore doubled both Abernethy and Curry home to make the score 7-3.

Abernethy finished 2-3 with four RBI and Moore went 2-4 with two RBI. Barnes went 2-2 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Kaska earned the mound win, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and five runs (none earned) and striking out six.

In the Mariners opening-game loss to Utica, Kaska went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Sean McBride went 3-4 with and RBI and Moore had two RBI.

Dougie Duncan suffered the mound loss pitching five innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs (five earned) and striking out three.

The Clinton County Junior Mariners are competing in the New York State Championship this week for a berth in the Northeast Regional in Bangor, Maine.

The Mariners face off against the Utica Blue Sox at 1 p.m. and Binghamton Post 1645 at 4 p.m. on Friday. All games are being played at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

Follow up to game one- they tied 5-5. At least it’s not a loss. Next game starts soon. Good luck boys!
