The Rotary Trail is the centennial project of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham Rotary celebrated its centennial in 2013.

Rotary Trail is one of the Club’s Centennial Projects. As part of the City’s evolving public space and greenway system, Rotary Trail connects with the award-winning Railroad Park and Regions Field along First Ave. South and is an anchor element of the Jefferson County Red Rock Ridge and Valley Trail System. Key Rotary Trail planners are joining Cheryl Morgan for walking tours to celebrate the trail's 10th Anniversary this year. Rotarians, Rotaract members & guests joined Cheryl and Rotarian Jane Reed Ross for an immersive look at the trail from the master planner’s perspective with focus on the complicated logistics, advanced vision casting, creative problem-solving and sustainable landscape considerations required to turn the abandoned railway cut into a beautiful thriving urban park.

The Rotary Club of Birmingham developed Rotary Trail as its centennial gift to the City of Birmingham in 2016. Over the past decade, we have worked in public-private partnership to maintain the park. To commemorate the trail's 10th anniversary, special projects are being completed to sustain the vitality and beauty of the trail. Recent upgrades include new waste receptacles, refreshed crushed stone and replacement of non-thriving plants throughout the trail, a new flagstone path at 23rd St. and repairs to damaged fencing. Thanks to our partners at Blackjack Horticulture, O. Jay Fence Company & Birmingham Parks & Rec and for helping to keep the trail looking its best!

Rotarian Cheryl Morgan is helping to celebrate Rotary Trail's 10th Anniversary with walking tours exploring Birmingham's history and architecture along with the process of transforming an abandoned railway cut into a beautiful urban park. Rotarians, Rotaract members & guests joined Cheryl and Rotarian Rusha Smith to learn how Rotary Trail fits within the 750-mile Red Rock Trail System that aims to connect residents throughout Jefferson County via trails, parks, sidewalks and bike lanes.

The Rotary Club of Birmingham recently welcomed Mayor Randall Woodfin, who shared updates on the city's progress and priorities. The mayor presented a proclamation recognizing the 10th anniversary of Rotary Trail, thanking Rotarians for their vision and partnership in creating a lasting asset that continues to connect downtown Birmingham, encourage economic development and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike. He discussed key initiatives aimed at strengthening Birmingham's future, including public safety, infrastructure, education, and economic development.

In celebration of Rotary Trail's 10th Anniversary, Rotarian Cheryl Morgan is leading walking tours to explore the history and architecture of Birmingham and the incredible efforts that went into transforming the abandoned railway cut into a beautiful linear park. Rotary Club of Birmingham & Rotaract members, family and friends recently teamed up for a service day on Rotary Trail. Volunteers spread mulch, removed litter, pulled weeds and prepared the trail for spring, when the warm weather brings thousands of visitors to the trail each week. Completed in 2016, Rotary Trail is RCB’s centennial gift to Birmingham. The $3.5 million project transformed a blighted abandoned railroad cut into a beautiful landscaped, four-block walking/running/biking pathway. In commemoration of the trail's 10th anniversary, RCB is completing special projects to enhance the area.

Ten years ago today, members of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, City of Birmingham officials and community partners gathered to dedicate Rotary Trail and to light the 46-foot “Rotary Trail in the Magic City” sign that marks the western entrance of the trail at 20th St. & 1st Ave. S. The $3.5-million project was made possible by Rotary's lead gift plus donations from the city, corporations and individuals. Freshwater Land Trust partnered with RCB to transform the long-abandoned railroad cut into a beautiful urban park, completing a key component of the Red Rock Trail System. Over the past decade, the trail has generated an estimated $74 million in economic impact to the surrounding area and spurred the development of additional trails and green spaces.
