Rick Shelton’s Last Day.
Our dear friend Rick Shelton, (Headmaster at The Alabama School of Fly Fishing), passed away in his sleep yesterday.
The last things Rick did on this earth were as follows :
Gave up his morning, so that a friend could help family in the hospital.
Spent his afternoon laughing with a brother.
Taught a fly casting student headed to Katmai, Alaska.
Felt the bend of three of the greatest fly rods ever created until after dark :
A 10’ , 7wt Dr. David D. Diaz custom rod from 2003
A 13’6”, 7wt. late 90’s two handed brown Sage Spey rod
A 9’ 7wt Winston BIIX
Smiling,(as always), said, “Good night and thank you Rob!”
Had SAWS bbq for dinner.
Told Kathy Shelton he loved her.
Left for his next adventures.
Man, we will miss you Rick Shelton….so dearly.
Thank you!
We love you!

Rest In Peace John W. Harris, “Bur”….
The bolt of lightning ripped through a hundred year old Sycamore fifty yards up the dark mountain side.
Giant wild magnolia blooms glowed white against boiling black storm clouds.
Bur, “Hey man, you’re not going to believe this, but I think it’s about to rain”, as his, “Wulff Bass Bug”, line came tight to another portly
Redeye.
Within seconds of our Wenonah, “Kingfisher”, sliding onto the bank, that mid-July, sweat soaked day on a North Alabama creek in the middle of nowhere, turned into something very different.
Late November had arrived mid-Summer.
The temperature dropped 30 degrees, birdsong stopped, frog croaking ceased, nature went silent.
Then it rained, and hailed, and the lightning began in earnest.
There was only enough time to sit in the mud.
For forty five minutes, at a distance of five feet, we could not see or hear one another.
We both thought, “the fat lady might be warming up”.
When the reprieve finally began, and hypothermia set in, a giant, “Bur smile”, emerged from the darkness, along with the words, “Man, there’s nowhere I’d rather be, and no one I’d rather be with”.
Well Bur Harris, please know we would give anything to spend just one more day on a creek bank with you.
This coming Tuesday, June 17, we say goodbye to our dear friend, Bur Harris, one of the greatest fly tyers, fly tying instructors, and the finest streamer fisherman the state of Alabama will ever know.
All of our lives are so much richer for having known you.
Thank you Bur.

Rest In Peace Mr. Marshall….
Yesterday we said goodbye to a fine friend.
Marshall Foster was one of the most giving humans we’ve ever met.
In a world that seems consumed by, “clicks”, “likes”, “follows”, and people desperate to show the online, “community”, how great they are, Marshall was a welcome departure from all of that nonsense.
What radiated from Mr. Marshall was a humble, quiet kindness and mastery at the fly tying vise that said in his actions, “It doesn’t matter one bit how great I am, let me show you how great you can be”.
All Marshall cared about was his family, his friends, his flies, and making music.
So, goodbye for now to one of the greatest fly tyers The State of Alabama has ever produced.
Marshall, we are so thankful that our paths crossed long ago.
We are thankful for all of the joy and beauty you brought to our lives.
You were truly one of a kind, and we will miss you dearly.
Rest In Peace Mr. Marshall.

Legends Lost.
The Fly Fishing world lost two titans this past year, Bob Popovics and John Gierach.
Bob Popovics was arguably the greatest DeerHair/Bucktail fly tyer that ever lived.
His thoughts and innovations will be dearly missed by thousands and thousands of Bucktail fanatics hollow tying, “Olive over White Reverse Bulkheads”, for generations to come.
John Gierach was as long as we can remember, the storyteller and humble, quiet voice of fly fishing.
His short stories and essays, laden with fall colors, icy mountain air, and giant rising brook trout, will forever make us think, “Where are my hiking boots, I can make that lake long before sunrise”!
We are forever grateful for these two infinitely soulful and humble men. Our lives would not be the same had they not passed this way.
Thank you.
