Save this for the next meltdown — three things that actually work better than ""calm down.""

1. Get down to their eye level before you say anything.
2. Name what they're feeling instead of telling them to stop feeling it.
3. Give them one small choice, so they feel back in control.

We use all three on the mat too.

The strongest kids in this room aren't the loudest ones.

They're the ones who feel secure enough in themselves that they don't need to prove anything to anyone.

I’ve had several discussions with other martial artists about self-defense lately. We all agree that staying aware and being prepared are the two key components. A friend shared the following today on her profile and I thought it would be good to share with my community. Stay Safe!

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Scoop of Heaven will donate 100% of sales to support the families of Columbia Police Department Officers Christopher DeLong and David Dymock. This effort is being conducted in partnership with the Columbia Police Department to honor their lives and service.

We are proud to stand alongside McDaniels Auto Group, Genova Family Karate, and GraceLife Church in this community-wide effort. We will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. that day, and we encourage the Columbia community to come out and support this cause.

Donations are also welcome. Checks or money orders can be made payable to the Columbia Police Department Foundation — please indicate "Dymock and DeLong Family" in the memo line so the donation can be directed appropriately.

Thank you to everyone coming together to support these officers and their families during this difficult time. ❤️

It's easy to say no to someone you don't like. It's a lot harder to say no to a friend.

That's the skill we build here — one class at a time.

An hour after school that isn't a screen. 🥋

Just a mat, a belt, and a child who leaves class a little more sure of themselves than when they walked in.

Save this for open house or parent-teacher week.

Sitting quietly isn't the same as paying attention — three signs your child is actually taking it in, not just sitting through it.

1. They can repeat the instruction back in their own words, not just nod.
2. They try it themselves before asking you to do it for them.
3. They catch and correct their own mistake, without being told.

We watch for the same three on the mat.

They walked in shy. 🙌A few belts later, they run with heads held high.
