New adjusters often make the mistake of trying to move too fast too soon.

When I’m working with a brand-new adjuster during that first week of a storm, I usually want them starting with:

Two claims a day.

One in the morning.
One in the afternoon.

The goal is not to cram as many inspections into the day as possible.

The goal is to learn how to:

Inspect. Scope. Write. Close.

Both claims.

Then do it again the next day.

Once you can consistently finish two complete files in a day, add one more.

That is how you build production without falling behind.

Earn the next claim.

You got 10–20 claims.

Now what?

The first move is not grabbing the phone and calling the first policyholder in the queue.

Back up.

Look at the entire batch from about 3,000 feet.

Where are the properties?

What types of losses are being reported?

Which claims look more involved?

Are there special instructions?

Where are the geographic clusters?

You are not adjusting every file yet.

You are trying to understand the workload you were given so you can build a smart plan before you start scheduling.

Understand the batch before you work the individual claim.

You got your first 10–20 claims. Now what?

This is where the job starts getting real.

Before you start calling policyholders and throwing appointments onto the calendar, you need to understand the workload you were given.

Start with the batch.

Look at:

where the claims are
what losses are being reported
which files may be more involved
how the claims cluster geographically
what your actual daily completion capacity is

Then build the schedule around what you can realistically inspect, scope, write, and close.

For a brand-new adjuster, that may mean starting with:

1 claim in the morning.
1 claim in the afternoon.

The goal is not to see how many inspections you can cram into a day.

The goal is to finish what you schedule.

Tomorrow, I’m breaking down the full workflow in:

You Got Your First 10–20 Claims! Now What? | New Adjuster CAT Workflow

We’ll cover batch review, routing, daily capacity, scheduling, contact calls, inspections, backlog control, and the full:

Inspect → Scope → Write → Close

process.

You inspected five claims.

Sounds productive.

But if you only wrote and closed one, then you did not produce five claims.

You produced one.

And now you have four unfinished files waiting on you tomorrow.

Do that again the next day and now you are eight files behind.

That is how a new adjuster gets buried.

Production is not just inspections.

The real workflow is:

Inspect → Scope → Write → Close

Finish what you schedule.

INSPECTIONS ARE NOT PRODUCTION

A lot of new adjusters measure production by how many inspections they complete.

That is the wrong number.

The real workflow is:

Inspect → Scope → Write → Close

If you inspect five claims but only close one file, you did not produce five claims.

You produced one.

And now you have four unfinished files waiting on you.

That is how the backlog starts.

Schedule to your completion capacity, not your inspection capacity.

Then repeat.

You made it to the storm.

You got operational.

Then 10, 15, maybe 20 claims hit your queue.

What now?

The first move is not to start calling policyholders.

Back up.

Review the batch.

Look at the geography.

Find the claim clusters.

Understand which files may be more involved.

And know how many claims you can realistically:

Inspect. Scope. Write. Close.

Do not let the workload control you.

Build a plan first.

A good estimate starts with a good inspection.

A lot of new adjusters think the estimate is where the claim starts.

It is not.

The estimate should be built from the inspection.

That means your:

photos
measurements
notes
scope
documentation

all need to support what you are writing.

If the inspection is weak, the estimate is going to be weak.

And no software is going to magically fix missing photos, vague notes, bad measurements, or an incomplete scope.

Before you write the estimate, understand the inspection.

You made it to the storm.

You checked in.

You went through orientation.

You got operational.

Then the claims start hitting your queue.

That is where Your First Deployment ends and Your First Real Claim begins.

Getting to the storm does not mean you are working the storm yet.

Now comes the part where you have to manage the workload:

review the claims
build the schedule
contact policyholders
inspect the properties
write the files
close the claims

You made it to the storm. Now the work starts.

Next up: Your First Real Claim

You made it to the storm.

You checked in.

You went through orientation.

You got your equipment ready.

You got organized.

And then it happens.

Claims start hitting your queue.

This is where the deployment stops being about getting there and starts being about doing the work.

Real claims.

Real policyholders.

Real property damage.

And now the question changes.

You got the claim. Now what?

That is where we are heading next in our Your First Real Claim series.

Get licensed. Get trained. Get ready.

You may know how to adjust claims.

That does not mean you know how this assignment works.

Every carrier, client, and IA firm can have different expectations.

How do they want photos documented?

What reports are required?

What are the file deadlines?

Who do you contact when there is a problem?

What does QA expect?

How are files submitted?

Orientation is where you learn the workflow you are actually expected to follow.

Do not assume every assignment works the same way.
