We’ve spent the last week looking at how our craft has grown from raw survival to character building, through the innovation of the 90s, and into the 3-phase self-protection systems we use today.
Now, we’re inviting you to join the journey.
Whether you’re looking for practical self-protection, a community that feels like home, or a way to challenge yourself both mentally and physically, the Teen/Adult program is the perfect place to start.

Self-protection is bigger than just a physical skill. 🧠
The scope of what it means to be safe is expanding. There are three distinct phases to self-protection, and we train for all of them:
🛡️ Phase 1: Situational Awareness. Recognizing events as they happen around you and having the knowledge to make smart decisions before a conflict ever starts.
🗣️ Phase 2: De-escalation. If you can’t avoid a situation, how do we use voice modulation, body language, and positioning to defuse it? This is where your presence and verbal skills become your strongest tools.
👊 Phase 3: Physical Skills. The techniques used only if the first two phases fail.
By training all three, students walk with a deeper confidence, knowing they have a full spectrum of tools to protect themselves and others.

By the early 2000s, traditional martial arts began a fresh evolution. We started taking cues from new systems on how to train for maximum effectiveness: looking for the holes in our own systems and finding ways to fix them.
But here’s the difference: this isn't about looking to be cage fighters. Most traditional practitioners aren't looking to put their bodies through that kind of abuse, but they still want training that *works*.
Traditional martial arts continues to evolve to support the personal pursuit of each student while adding elements that sharpen the self-protection side of things. It’s about being effective, safe, and enjoying the process. We train for longevity and protection, not just for the ring.

The myth-busting era. 🛡️
When martial arts first arrived in the USA, it entered a bit of a time capsule. For about 60 years, the arts remained largely static, focusing on history and myths without much innovation or change.
That all changed in the early 90s with the arrival of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and the subsequent invention of MMA. This was a massive turning point for traditional martial arts: it showed us where we had gotten stuck in the "myths of history" and forced us to look at functional reality again.
It was a wake-up call that sparked a return to the application process. We started asking, "Does this actually work?" and blending traditional values with a new, pressure-tested understanding of effectiveness.

Beyond the physical techniques of survival lies a beautiful evolution that shaped the modern world of martial arts. While many masters played a part in this movement, we can look to two of the most influential figures in history to see how it took hold: Anko Itosu and his student, Gichin Funakoshi.
Anko Itosu started the process in Okinawa, but it was Funakoshi who truly championed the idea of the "Do" (the Way) to the world. When he introduced martial arts to the school system in Japan, the focus shifted from purely combat to character building, discipline, and history.
Martial arts became a tool to forge stronger minds, kinder hearts, and more resilient spirits. It wasn't just about how to protect oneself in battle, but how to better oneself in life. This spread from Japan to the entire world, and by and large, we wouldn't be training the way we do today without their vision and the collective efforts of the masters of that era.

Before martial arts was a hobby, a sport, or a way to get fit, it was a survival tool.
In the late 19th century, the landscape of martial arts was purely about protection. There were no points for style, no trophies for performance, and no commercial gyms. The only metric that mattered was practicality: Does this technique keep me safe?
During this era, practitioners focused entirely on self-protection. Training was raw, direct, and designed for high-stakes situations. Every movement had to be efficient because survival was the foundation of the art. The goal was simple: neutralize a threat and stay safe.
Understanding these origins is vital. While there are now layers of character development and personal growth, that original practical foundation is never lost. Whether you are in the Kids program or Adult classes, you are learning skills forged in the necessity of protection.
